1970 Skylark - Wiring at fuse block for Power Window & Map Light options

Here are the parts that I used to hook up power windows and a map light to my 1970 Skylark.

The basic problem is that a capacitor, and the power window relay, and the map light all need to be plugged into the same port in the fuse block. Here are the parts that I used to accomplish this.

    1. First, since my car originally did not have either option, I had to swap out the capacitor with the white plug with the one with the brown plug. The brown plug allows an additional plug to be piggy backed into it. For me, this was the crucial step in allowing me to wire my car as the factory suggests.
    2. Plug the gray Map Light jumper harness into the brown plug at the fuse block.
    3. I swapped out the white connector on the power window relay for a standard male black connector, and plugged it into the Map Light jumper harness
    4. Plug in the Map Light to the Map Light jumper
I should also mention that my car did not have any power options, so a power relay and bus bar were added too. This is where the orange wires with black tracers for each option attach. Fortunately, for the 1970 harness, the bus bar can be added to the fuse block with the fuse block in place. Later years require it to be added from inside the fuse block, which is marginally more difficult.

Also, the white plug on the power window relay wire that I swapped out only fits into the fuse block at the IGN position. Perhaps this is where later years installed this option? I believe this is the case, as I did see on ebay a capacitor that plugs into the IGN position that, like my brown connector, allows another piggy back jumper. It was only $15 if you need it.

This took me some time to figure out, so hopefully this may save you some time!

Doing this same thing to mine. Where did you get your parts? Fortunately I got the 3 way splitter for pwr accys which will allow me to power the wdows and locks and have 1 spare location available for the map light

    Hi Scott,
The parts that I used were ones that I've collected over the years. I didn't look for a current source.

I have found that the gray Map Light jumper typical for cars with power options. This includes the big Buicks too, which use the same jumper. Here in Denver these cars still appear in salvage yards, albeit not like the old days.

I would suggest that you wire the map light to a switched connection. In my 69 it was amazing how often that map light got switched on by accident. My wife and I drove the car so the mirror got moved a lot.

Lou makes a good point, as I have experienced this too.

The factory shows a capacitor in the circuit with the map light, so you might run into whatever problem that addressed. The ebay part that I referenced above did have a capacitor in the circuit and a connector for the IGN port of the fuse block.
