Hello All Is a 19070- 1972 skylark frame the same in every way would any mods need to be to car or Frame??
so i was just asked if a 1968 and 1969 frame for a skylark is the same as a 1971 anyone have that answer??
There are several different frames for Skylarks. I think there are discussions about them in several other forums on the board from some years back. PaulGS is correct about the Hollander Interchange manual. I would also suggest the Fisher Body manual and the factory service manual along with the Buick parts catalog.
If you're asking if a 70, 71, and 72 frame are all the same, I believe they are for the same type car. I believe there were 4 different basic frames: 4-door/wagon, vert, GS w/455 & 2-door Skylark/GS w/L6 or 350. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I once put a '71 Skylark frame under a '70 GS 350 w/no mods.
68-72 2 door hardtop frames are essentially the same across the board. As an example, a 68 GTO hardtop frame will fit under a 72 GS-350 hardtop
IF the frame part numbers are different, then there are differences between them. The frames will interchange, but they may be 100% correct. Engineers changed part numbers if fit, form, or function is different.
Your correct Paul, a 70 Skylark 2 door hardtop has a different part number frame than a 70 GS 455 hardtop. Whats the difference? Ive heard the GS 455 frame used a thicker metal in its construction but Ive never micrometered the thicknesses to prove or disprove that theory. To the naked eye, they are virtually identical. That why I said they were "essentially the same" If the OP has a bad frame in his 71 Skylark and has an opportunity to get a frame out of a 68/69, then yes, it will fit no problem
455 vs 350 engine mounts is one difference Jason. I’ve never heard anything about a difference in gage of metal.
Yes, the Big Block frames are thicker. I checked my 1970 GS 455 frame and a 1970 Skylark frame that I have. I don't remember the exact numbers, but you will see a difference. Marv.
