I assume that you mean the axle housing width-- meaning what we call the "drum to drum" measurement?

You want the OVER ALL drum to drum NOT the flange housing end to housing end.

The only width that counts is your complete over all width with drums in place. Ford has a totally different brake offset than the Original riv rear etc. You need to have all your Duck in a row. YOU SHOULD WAIT....

crossing my fingers for you. Jim

Save yourself alot of work and headache and just swap in a 8.5 its a direct swap and it had alot of aftermarket support

Which 8.5 ' rear fits a 71-72 Riviera? I have been told that NONE of them will fit the E-Body Riviera....that the Ford 9" is the only option....I need to replace the rear in my 71 Riviera!!!

No it is not a 9 inch Ford. It is a post 70 9 3/8” BOP which technically is an Olds. There are some used gear sets but I do not believe there are any reproductions. There is a stuck thread on this topic.

Start your own thread under the Parts Wanted section. Also go to the “got gears “ forum and read the thread about 72 Riv rear gear options.
