Working on firing my 455 for the first time.

We're priming the oiling system. Plenty of pressure on the gauge. 60+psi.

Nothing coming up through the rods or anything else. Videos online are of little help. Some show the rods spitting oil, others are just going by the gauge.

I'm using a cordless drill. Do I need more speed? Do I go by the gauge or by the rods?

If you have 60 psi, you have enough speed. If the gage drops to near zero when you stop the drill, then that shows the gage is "trustworthy" to that extent.

How long did you run the prime?

Mine took almost 2 minutes before it finally showed oil up top, but once it started, it was there after letting the car sit for two days, and then I checked it again just before dropping the distributor in and firing it up, and it had oil up top in a few seconds.

My prime and cold pressure is 40 PSI and runs about 33-38 when fully warm at 3000-3500 RPM, and about 20 at 650 RPM Idle.

(for my prime, I took about a 1" diameter peice of PVC pipe 6 inches long and two caps from oil bottles, and one of those long landscape timber nails and made a "guide" primer.

Epoxied the caps in, drilled holes through the center, and cut a notch were the bottem of the "tool" hits the cam gear so it would set centered in the pump shaft, and the guide kept the "nail" centered in the oil pump shaft.

Took me about 15 minutes to put it together from parts I had lying around.[IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

You should be good, when I primed my motor after cam ,timing cover install I used A 1/2 in electronic drill, had my dad watch the oil gauge. After turning the drill I started filling and hearing the drill bog down ,at the same time dad said the gauge was reading 70.I was good to go.

    It dropped off immediately.

    I'm using an official tool.

I let it spin for "a song on the radio" which is a tried and true measure when you're not wearing a watch!

My apologies. I was in the "nailhead" (no oil through pushrods) mode, not 455.

Dwayne is correct. You have oil with some, you will have oil on all as soon as the engine turns over.
