Do it like a pro and dont guess Bob! Get a 1 ounce bottle of fluorescent dye for the oil and buy a cheap (maybe 5-10.00) blacklight off ebay and check it. Youll get almost instantaneous results and wont hafta guess at it.

Pour the bottle in and let it run for 5 minutes; youll be surprised at seeing other gaskets "weeping" etc. Theres dye for the water side too. The oil stuff works on trans leaks as well.

The alternative is just keep second guessing yourself and throw $$$ at gaskets and time AND the mess of course. Mine leaked right there from a warped valve cover, and then chinaman chrome jobs. I went with used chrome Riviera covers and it is bone dry now. ws

Did that plug modification. Even the Felpro blue headgaskets have the "hole" so the oil has to stop at the head. Ive always had an oil puddle in the distributor valley area. This should cease and desist! The plug is set in PTFE and the yellow is a paint marker job so I could find it in the dark when I dropped it on the floor. I spend more time looking for stuff that'll roll down to New Zealand before I find it LOL... ws

Looks like a very tiny leak right in the 3way corner and seeping right down the block head space.

Still need to get the dye to verify. Plus see what else could be.. PO painted motor black yuk I hate black motors..

Well I'll dammed. lets Back up it time. Motor did leak oil. Fixed all the leaks which included R&R the intake . Then I had to remove intake manifold again to put steel inserts in. ( had carb issues all the off&on's worn out the threads. ) Just got done reinstalling the intake then the leak appears. Naturally I assumed intake is leaking. I crawl under car looking around see oil high on the block. Well I put the UV oil in. Put the light to it Pan gasket is the culprit. Tighten the bolts wiped gown the best I could. Its still hot do it again when cooler. Keep a eye on it, All I want to do for now. 2nd thought I'll put some lock washers on tomorrow.

    Again thanks

Btw Ive never used that UV oil & Black light I like it.. Question how long does that glowing oil last in the motor oil?

It lasts through your oil change and then there will still will be some residual glowing with the blacklight. I have used it with good results.

Glad it helped Bob... Ive used a lot on big diesel stuff where EVERYTHING is oily and gaskets are EXPENSIVE LOL. I drove an old 18 wheel dump truck with an 8-71 Detroit that leaked a gallon a day. The owner said oil was cheaper than dye! ws

Haven't heard 8-71 in decades. I worked on 8-71's. a couple of 12v-71's. a 16-71, and more EMD's to shake a stick at. Those puppies could leak like no tomorrow.....

The last boat I bought was a Hurricane Rita rescue. It belonged to Bubba Oustallet (Ford ,Lincoln, Mercury) over on the Industrial Canal just above the Chef Menteur Bridge in 2006. That guy has two 12-71s @ 550 HP each. Got it going in NOLA and ran it home to Chicago. That area is the home of Detroits, but alas theyre all 60 series now. All that Tier fuel/emissions BS. Two Strokes are where its at (well, were!) ws

I was a cell technician up until 2-1/2 years ago. I am working toward getting back into Telecom. I really miss the industry. But ahem..... I took care of a couple of sites in that part of the Chef, and the Industrial Canal where the MRGO dumps into the Intracoastal... I remember Bubba Oustallet, I don't know if he has any dealerships around here now, I don't here his name mentioned much any more. I did check he has some dealerships in Baton Rouge, and out towards Jennings / Layfayette area. The 6V-53's were screaming beast's. 12-71 should pushed whatever boat you had them in pretty well. How long did it take you from the Crescent City to the Windy City? Did you go up the Misssissippi all the way? or ? How was the fuel burn? If you want to PM me, that is fine too, I don't want to hijack the OP.

The engine was pretty crusty looking. Once I sorted out the coolant header tank, I made everything out then..... It had aluminum valve covers, so the engine wasn't ancient........
