231 performance....going 4-barrel maybe

I checked the thermostat housing today, and I'm pretty sure a Qjet with front fuel inlet (specially those with the long sticking out ones) will not work. My 2-bbl carb has a front inlet, but it's routed in such a manner it won't foul the thermostat housing. But I quess I will run into trouble with a Qjet.

But I'm still going back and forth on going squarebore (a Holley 390 for example) or going spreadbore (Qjet). Dan, I'll contact you in 2 weeks or so on your Holley 390.

You say the Kenne Belle intake (I might be interested in that one also) is an intermediate port intake. What exactly does that mean? Does it fit the early heads (like I have) AND the tall port heads?

I don't know for sure how much hood clearance . I think it's going to be okay, even the Kenne Bell. Shaggy said that he ran into a hood clearnance issue. But I think a Century has more hood clearance than a Skyhawk (correct me if I'm wrong). But I will try to measure how much hood clearance I have. Holley 390 ain't that tall right? And it combination with a dropped air cleaner I might be in the clear for sure.

If you go Qjet, the Weiand would probably accept it easier
since it has a larger plenum opening. Here's a picture of the
    Weiand with Qjet adapter:

Yes. The ports are smaller than those of the tall port heads so they
    fit either heads.

    Correct.

I stand corrected... I guess the good news is that there's enough metal to open it up to a tall port head.

    FreeBird,

I haven't put the engine in the skyhawk yet. I'd bet that the Century has more hood clearance though. The Holley intake is taller than stock so I've picked up a drop base air cleaner. I'll have to wait and see if it's dropped enough.

Dan, thanks for those pics! Those are 2 nice looking intakes! I somehow like the Kenne Bell best. I'll contact you in about 2 weeks or so on the intake and Holley carb. If you already have an idea of how much you want for the parts, please let me know (PM)

    Yeah I did one LOL:D
It was an '82 Regal 231, I used the factory 4.1 4 bbl intake.
For the carb I used an Olds 307 CCC Rochester Q-Jet, I jetted the primary side of the Q-Jet same as the Dual Jet, so not to upset the computer, since I was still running on the CCC, but at or near WOT, the computer goes into open loop, and its game on, as the secondary side you could jet as you needed.
It was pretty cool to hear the Q-Jet moan as the secondaries start opening, and that 231 start running like it wanted too, it was pretty sweet:p:p:p

    alec296 i need another buick

3.08/3.23 gears and more converter would change performance of the 6 more over the 4 barrel.

X2 that poor V6 got its bad rap as a slug from the **** 2.41 gears they saddled it with, and a huge convertor that stalled at 900 rpm

I had a 390 Vac secondary Holley on my KB #1 intake and it was a turd.
The Q-Jet will outrun a Vacuum Secondary Holley any day.
    Do a 4.1 litre 4 bbl intake with a Q-Jet:cool:

Looks like a blower would fit very nice on top of that big hole in the wieand intake.. :D

That is interesting, never seen that Weiand intake before for the V6, looks like a rubber O-ring goes around the perimeter of the plenum opening.

IMO, that looks like an EGR passage. You can just barely see the hole at the back and the notches on the inner lip of plenum. Then, if you look at rear view pic, you can see the casting bulge that leads down to the EGR pad.

I wonder if it could be modified for nitrous(sneaky!) or just use it for an oring seal.

Waste of time, money, effort, and enthusiasm. Very little return-on-investment.

Drop-kick that bent-6, put a real engine in the car.

A buick 350 is a bolt in using v6 engine mounts on alot of 231 v6 cars.
