I wonder where they get that from "17 year". I see their shells/ discarded exo-skeletons seems like every year, and damn if they are LOUD!
They sure do make a mess on the windshield and hurt like hell when riding a motorcycle. Its like getting hit with a rock.
I remember driving to the nationals (Maybe Regionals) probably about 17 years ago LOL in my 53 Buick, the meet was in Columbus Ohio and the locust were so heavy that they were actually covering the road and the trees were bare. You could actually here them on the underside and We had to close the windows as they were coming in and then smashing on the back window. It was a wicked cleanup once I got there, and then once I got home. Even the wheel wells and wire wheel covers were plastered. And the front end of a 53 Buick is very unforgiving to Bugs.
There's are 13 year and 17 year periodical cicadas plus some other varieties that come up yearly as well. Different area's have the cycles at different times, not all are the same calendar year. Environmental issues can cause them to emerge early as well, global warming for one as the cicadas have more warm ground days than they used to. Also if an area is forested or de-forested that could also change the cycle , there is something in the sap that can also awaken them early if temps are too warm. There will be some ever year, just many more other years
...3 so far this year. Supposedly they're Brood 10 members who can't count. This is a Brood 8 year, but I don't live in PA, WV, or OH, so maybe they got lost...
Steve that’s locust. this cruder is different. I was out in my yard tonight sitting in my lounger. it was getting dark. My girls ran outside walked up to me and looked down. Started screaming. lol I looked down. the whole yard was crawling with them every couple inches. thousands. everywhere. walked across my street looked in my neighbors yard. Not one circada. wierd
Dog Day Harvest flies are louder. Like a chainsaw. Also called a cicada. Same family as periodical cicada. Some think they are locusts.
All the Robins were snatching all those Circadas. this morning. Funny those sons of Bitches. Would not touch a stink bug for 3 years. lol
