68 Riviera diff fried

Discussion in 'Got gears?' started by Kent Greenwood, Jul 19, 2019.

  1. I have just removed the diff from the housing on my Riv and the end gears and spiders are bruised.
The Pinion bearing collapsed and has spun on the shaft.
At some stage the axle bearings have been replaced as they are smooth as silk
Should I build it or bin it.
I like the sound of a later Riv 8.5 diff
However the shipping back to New Zealand would make my eyes water
    Ideas and costs please
I could just re-bearing it and bodgy the rest close my eyes and jam it back together

  2. Randy's will make new 9 3/8" gear sets min order 100
    and posi's min order 400
Who is interested? only 399 to go

Did they give you a price on the gearset IF they made them? I researched having gearsets made, and it was going to cost $10k to get it going. This would result in a pricey gearset and a slow return,if any,on the investment.

  4. I didn't get that far Brian. As you can imagine.
It would take a concerted effort by the entire Buick community to continue down this path.
I think I will put some bearings in and just drive it.
    It was pretty good before.
    It will be even better

    Ask Fab Craft.

I had also talked with FabCraft about making gears, and it was also about $10k to get it all started. They would likely be a $500.00 set of gears,if not more.

RIGHT NOW THEY CAN NOT EVEN GET THE GEARS THEY HAVE engineered Built....So. I would say that is going to be a FAR stretch to get done.
