Ive been out 3 times now terrorizing the local onramps and quiet streets. If the rings aren't seated now, they never will. Had my son in law out on the first trip…on the throttle, off the throttle…..he survived. now its tuning….this cam needs a tn of initial advance. At 24 degrees, she doesnt like to idle below 1000 in gear. The qjet is into the primary circuit to idle high enough. Im looking at adding more bypass air and i have a couple sets of factory drilled primary throttle blades to get these blades closed some. Oil pressure hot is 35 at 1200 rpm and 60 lbs at 2500. Currently running BR40, so maybe i should go to Driven 10-30 next oil change.
Lock the timing out and use a start retard. I'd do that before drilling holes in the throttle plates.
Larry, with the Progression distributor, it defaults to 10 degrees advance at cranking speed. Another feature is you can put whatever advance you want into each cell of the timing table. Stage 2 iron, why cant I run a Holley? I plan on using my HP1000 for strip use. It fits, its the same height as the qjet.
Stage 2 Iron, Yes i did have an interference issue with fuel line to the Holley. Ive moved that heater hose to the rear passenger corner of the intake, so im ok feeding the Holley now. Ill get the qjet sorted. Likely have to further richen up the idle circuit and add more idle bypass air.
Started changing valve springs. The TA tool is great on the engine stand, but needs modifications to use in the car with ac box and power brake booster in the way. Will get er done.
Good friend of mine modified the TA spring compressor so you can use it as designed, or with these attachments as pictured below.
Nice modification there Brad. Now you have valve springs in you can buzz the RPM up a little. It will be cool to see how it does on the dyno. Greg
I had the same issue on mine with the SP3 and AED (Holley) I did the same as you, picked up water from the right rear port on the SP3
Taking the 1981 Qjet apart to add some more idle fuel, compared the idle screws to a 704 series carb, they are a much finer thread. To be 4 turns out on the 704 series, i need to be 6.5 turns out to be comparable. Apparently the newer qjets have a finer metric thread. So ill just try starting at 6.5 turns out and go from there to richen this idle. Idle tubes, DCR and holes for the idle mixture to exit baseplate have all been richened. 0.038 idle tubes, 0.058 dcr, 0.096 idle discharge holes. Taking the car out tomorrow.
I tried a couple of the APT qjets and never could get them to be as explosive as the earlier carbs not sure why
Well adjusted apt at light cruise today - getting low 14’s to low 15’s After sorting the metric fine thread idle screws, engine will idle at 850 rpm in gear. not sure what wide open throttle is yet, too much happening- tires spinning, accelerating quickly…..i need a co pilot. That will be son in laws job soon. It will be a while before I get to the track or chassi dyno. Will report back when I do.
A great friend of mine (Mart) made one and sent it to me to use I got to get this back to him, he might need it.
