How do I Remove / Replace an Alternator Clutch?

    I have a C5 vette with a good alternator that has a very squeaky clutch on it.

    I also have a low-miles bad alternator with a good clutch.

    Can't quite figger out to do the swap, even with a clutch removal tool kit I borrowed.

    Which direction do I turn what and how?

    Recently replaced one on an 2008 Opel Astra diesel had not seen one before , had me scratching my head for a bit , not seen one on a C5 but I’m guessing it’s similar, the spline fits through the hollow socket hold the hollow socket with a ring wrench ,turn the spline anticlockwise to undo , they are really tight use a decent socket on the spline bit , hope this helps

    I'm sure one of the big auto parts retailers rents the tool kit required

    Borrowed the kit from O O O'Reilly. My corvette mechanic buddy and I were still both stumped. No dice. Hence this thread.

    Forgive my ignorance but, why is there a clutch on an alternator, and is this only on Corvettes? I've never heard of such a thing.

    From the net:
    A4 equipped C5's, beginning in 2001 have a clutch attached to the alternator pulley. It's used to prevent a slow idle or stalling while stopped, when the transmission is in drive.
    and
    The clutch pulley on an alternator, also known as the overrunning alternator pulley or alternator freewheel clutch, allows the alternator to coast when the engine is shut down, reduces belt slippage, and alleviates stress on the belt drive system. This helps the alternator to last longer and prevents the belt from becoming overstressed. The clutch pulley also decouplings the alternator from the crankshaft's rotational irregularities. For example, if the engine is running at 4000 rpm and the throttle is closed, the overrun pulley will allow the alternator to coast down instead of being forced to slow down.
    I guess a 250 amp monster needs stress relief! Learned something new!

    It also adds another thing that will need repairs in the future that wasn't necessary for 60 years prior.

    How did you go, fix it? I only found out about these things after listening to the quite rattling noises which over a month gradually became louder, and that I couldn't identify, so, I let it develop, which it did, about 90 mile from home, the noise stopped, and we drove home on the battery, watching all the warning lights. Cheers
