Not sure if I want to replace glass yet but either way, need to remove paint. Seems like the glass is held in by rubber maybe. What do I use to remove paint? And how do you replace the glass if I order new ones from Todd? Thanks
Get the new glass first to see exactly how it will fit. Then you can probably just break the old mirror glass. To be safe, I would probably cover the old glass with tape before breaking it out. Just remember, it will be seven years of bad luck!
Depends on what the paint is - if you are lucky lacquer thinner will take it off. If its enamel you can gently use a razor blade. Go straight, no sideways movement.
I asked this very question years ago. The glass is mounted with silcon adhesive. It uses the same glass as Camaro and Firebird from 70 til 81. (Later years will have the curved 'Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.')
As far as paint removal, your best bet is to clean, sand and repaint. to remove the glass use a heat gun to soften the adhesive while gently prying on the glass. The factory placed adhesive dots at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. this guy has a pretty decent videos on how to restore the mirrors:
Thanks. I'll take a look. Not sure if I am going to replace the glass yet. But did sand and paint the edges already. Didn't realize they were just plastic. Thought it was rubber initially.
