I can't separate the entertainer from their politics anymore Bill. Not a huge music aficionado but I've always liked Mark Knopfler a lot & while there's a prob. a handful of songs I've never heard from his 10 solo albums, I have listened extensively every Dire Straits album and seen dozens of interviews w/him. Maybe I've missed something & while I have my suspicions, I honestly don't know where he stands politically.

If only listened to musicians I agree with politically, I’d have a very small (and dull) record collection.

So Bill, my question is, Why mention politics at all? It wasn't necessary for the purposes of this thread. All you had to do is mention that you like Neil Young. I suspect you wanted to find a back door way to stoke a political discussion, and still have plausible deniability.

I'm a Canadian who's had his fill of Neil Young's music, mostly because of extensive overplay on radio.
BTW, he became an American citizen in 2020.

Do the content laws for the radio apply to the entire country or just near the border?

There was a free concert in Miami for Neil Young‘s 40th birthday. A bunch of friends and I went to it. Holy sheet! Boy was it a party! Somebody was passing around one of those Cheech and Chong album marijuana cigarettes. The one that was as big as an album. Everybody was coughing from it. It came to me and I took a big toke. Oh crap! I never coughed so much in my life. The guy next to me that handed it to me finish coughing and told me he tried to warn me that it was Pineneedles but he was coughing so much he couldn’t. Too funny!
It was supposed to be a two day concert. We had a hotel and went back early the next morning. No way Jose. That park was so trashed it was definitely not going to be another day of partying, so we went to a different free concert and saw Foghat. What a weekend.
That night at the Neil Young concert everyone was pretty effed up including me. I didn’t know it but there was a guy in a wheelchair right behind me. I was standing up and went to sit down and ended up in his lap. All his friends were kind of punching me on my back. It didn’t hurt. I felt no pain. It’s still funny to think about today.

As a Canadian, I also do not like Neil Young's politics either. He trashed the oil sands project, not giving them credit for the remediation they have done on the sites after they extracted the oil. He particularly picks on Alberta, where I live. His music I enjoy, whether CSN&Y, Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse, or solo.

He preaches about the environment, and points to his electric car. what he doesn't point out are the Rigs required to move his equipment, the airplanes required to get to concerts overseas... He has a larger carbon footprint than most people.

This is exactly why Larry's post wins the day. Why bring up politics at all? Most guys on this board are ate up with politics. Everyone feels the need to tell everyone else how they feel about politics. Who cares?
Listen to Neil Young or don't listen to him. Who cares about the rest of it.
Too many dudes all up in their feelings on this board. Lol

Neil Young is a genius and his music rocks. Unlike many other "stars", his music will live on long beyond him and us.

    Topcat Got TORQUE?

No Larry....you are wrong,i am not a backdoor man:p.....i was just being truthful....when i started listening to him he just made music(early 70's)...but the last many years he has made his views well know and he's not even American....if he would have kept his pie hole shut about what is happening in our country i would not feel the way i do about about him now.....yes his music rocks and he can still rock with the best but i would never bestow genius status on him......i posted those clips so the V8 peeps could enjoy ;)

Sorry if my honesty triggered you or anyone else.......now you can hit the delete button which i am sure your finger is hovering over :D

See you soon my friend !

I believe it's the entire country. IMO, there's many Canadian acts who couldn't get airplay without those laws. Giving them a free ride reduces the need for playing anywhere and everywhere to garner support as it should be. I saw many (good) bands in local bars during the 70's that never went beyond that scene. Happy to report my ears survived the experience. :p

I try not to listen to any musicians political views. Neil slapped us in the face with his. Valdy, another awesome Canadian musician, is an eco hippy and makes it known, but doesn't deride you if you disagree.

I try not to let things affect my opinion of the music. Neil has produced some incredible music in his career, and I am grateful to listen to it.

Let's not get hung up on politics. Let's just "Dig the groove man.".
