“Light” front end

So took the car out today for its first longish drive(85ish miles). Car ran great. Didn’t miss a beat. My issue it the front end seems very “light”. Doesn’t feel planted. Like it’s skimming on the pavement if that makes sense. Steering is responsive but feels like front is floating.

Front end is all new. Moog 5391 springs, new bushings in stock control arms, Bilstein shocks, all new Proforged steering parts, rebuilt steering box from Hector, & 1.25” UMI sway bar.

Any suggestions or ideas or is this pretty normal for “A” bodies?

What are your alignment specs? Our cars were designed to be able to have manual steering. Therefor there is not much caster in the front end. If you can find a shop that knows how to align our cars try to get as much caster as you can and about 1/8th inch toe in.

I just had it aligned and I was told I got as caster as they could get out of the stock control arms. Told them what I wanted. Said car would go straight as an arrow. Like a dummy though after a long day I forgot to ask for spec sheet.

I think you want to compare the car to modern cars. You can't do that.:) You can make it feel like a modern car, but it will cost a lot of money.

Very true but is a "light" "floating" feeling common with our cars?

No sounds like the springs are too soft

Anything over 100 MPH he Riv feels like its floating. One HAS to drive these old cars. Nothing like a new car which pretty much drives itself.

What is the ratio of your steering box? The variable units give no road feel at all.

Sorry for the mix-up. I meant to put 5398 for my springs. Not 5391:oops:.

The 71 gs455 spring is a heavy wire spring,..sounds like there is too much stored energy,...did you tighten the control arms unloaded?

I did. I also seated them correctly in the control arm. My ride height seems to be pretty close as well from what I recall as well.

My fast ratio steering box makes such a HUGE difference in the way the BIG cars feel & handle you wouldn't believe it. Almost feels as good as Rack & Pinion. Bolt-in replacement for ones that uses an "808" P/S box.
