1) The 440 wedge motor when properly prepared can make as much HP as a HEMI on gasoline, and if done properly will actually have a faster rate of acceleration which = Low ET. :Brow: 2) The 440 is lighter than a HEMI which always helps the Power to Weight ratio. :3gears: 3) The HEMI's were originally designed for Extended Use High RPM (i.e. circle track), the wedge motors were primarily for acceleration (i.e. drag racing) :Smarty: 4) The HEMI has dominated Top Fuel because in Supercharged form the port layout allows large amounts of fuel in and out of the engine (unburned or not) :Smarty: 5) With a 500 inch Wedge w/Stage 6 heads we have made over 900 HP, with 593 inches and B-1 heads we have made 1100+ HP, not too bad for a wedge... So the question is: Who and when is someone going to build a supercompetivie wedge motored MOPAR??? Stay tuned......
Better combo? Rob Which combo are you speaking of?The ZL1?? The L89 has the closed chamber heads, they don't flow nearly as well as my 074's.Maybe I'm missing something, that wouldnt be a first by any means! Not getting defensive here, just asking a question. o No:
I am guessing he means under FAST rules, the L-89 might just be a better combo. Hog out the heads, make them open chamber if you want, and 1100+ cfm of tri-power.......
Yessir... You can easily close the gap in the head flow, but an L88 is still hindered by a single carb...in fact, I'd say the tri-power setup would be superior from one end of the track to the other...and, there is a reason why the NHRA rates the L71/L89 50+ horsepower *higher* than the L88/ZL1 engines, and is the only Chevrolet that is SS/A legal... ------------------------- Hillbilly Racing Team "Expert fishermen are master baiters..."
All Wayne needs is a set of 3919842 heads and a tri power set up........ Oh Boy.......they even made more that 116 of those cars :beer
I know this is primarily a F.A.S.T. post. However. How would that same Chevy engine do in 3800 lb mid-size car. I'm not taking anything away from any of these cars. The vette included. A very fast car. Just curious. Patrick
But then Wayne would be a FULL second in front of everyone else, and they'd be bitching that they need to legalize a '77 Plymouth Arrow with a Hemi in it ...... PS - I am a Mopar guy .........
Hey Wayne, I found you a nice complete tri power set up :Brow: and it's cheaper that a Fairlane or a Nova :eek2:
Paging Rob Clary !!! Rob, you are more "up" on the old Stock and SS classes than me. Lets ask this question ????? In 1969, when you ran your L88 Corvette, what class were you in ? And more importantly ..... what was your competition ?
what? Tom Keep it up Tom,I'll stop going easy on you guys! As far as the Tri-Power goes, you can keep it,I had one on the car for 3 years, yes it flowed more total cfm,but was I was not impressed at all.You would be surprised how much cfm you can get out of a 850 Holley, and have much less tuning issues.I'll stick with the L88,thank you. :TU:
i would be willing to bet my new hemi that you'll NEVER get 400 cfm from ANY FAST legal big block mopar wedge head . MAX WEDGE EXCLUDED
the problem is the cylinder heads that are LEGAL by the rules ... READ CASTING NUMBER CORRECT ... except for the max wedge head , all SUCK , you are hard pressed to get 300-310 cfm out out them and when you do its only a matter of time before they crack because the castings become very thin . the only 2 heads i know of that may be less crack prone are ILLEGAL if you go faster than 11.7 , the late 452 and the stage 5 iron head . tom , i want to see you build one that will run in the 11's , the one i have been talking about for a few years now may go into the 11's , but it won't be legal (i already have too much $$$ invested in my 452's to start again). starting from scratch with a 906/346 head and having it ported by someone with a clue to get 300cfm and put in the new parts required is going to cost about 2k. the only wedge motors i see with the potential are the 6pk and the the max wedge , a single 4bbl is NON competitive because the intake SUCKS and the LEGAL carb is too small to support the large cubes required .
Oh stop it John! Noboby has claimed to get 400 cfm out of a wedge head.300 cfm is all you need in a wedge. AND don't forget the Buick that lurks in the waters. How does his little carb work? How about his FLAT intake manifold or those LOGS that hang off the sides. Do you think they work? I've said it before and I'll say it again, Don't make me show you that a big block dart can run in the 11s. BTW, John my heads only flow 270 and you will see some 11s real soon
Dart in the tens? No problem, right Tom? Do it Tom!!! Show the nay sayers how it's done!!I'll bet you have a perfect car in your stable to prove it.Go Tom Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!! :beer
Just 11's won't do anymore, Jim has already been there in his certified pure stock Superbee. You need to go deep into the 11's if you run it in FAST. :Brow:
