Hi i am in the process of starting the refinish job on my wagon,it has the original paint, acrylic lacquer.Do i have to strip to bare metal?? I am going original colour wedgewood blue in base clear. What kind of primer is best?,it has some minor surface rust but nothing serious.I only want to do this once.Is epoxy primer the best to use.....? There are some small dents(in every corner,i dont think he used his mirrors when backing up! :Do No: )) Should the minor bodywork on the dents be done before or after primer is on?? any info most welcome....DD

    DD,

I'm not the expert on these matters but if you go to the link below you will find all the answers to your questions.

    1. If your paint has any small cracks (which it probably does at that age) then it will have to be stripped.

    2. Yes, epoxy primer is the best base primer.

    3. Some people say body filler before primer and others say primer then filler. There are some epoxy primers and some body fillers that the filler can be applied over the primer which would be prefferable as it would eliminate the chance for moisture and rust to be trapped between the filler and metal. You need to research the manufacturer's tech sheets for the products to find ones that are compatable.

Again, look at the link as it is all about these topics.

    Good luck.
