1966 Buick Skylark Modified Stocker

I have been wanting to build a model of my car to try some paint combos, and also just for something to do. The only one that seems to exist is this AMT "Modified Stocker" kit. Its a Skylark alright, but the picture on the box is rather ghoulish looking. Its all circle-tracky, with braces and and a cage and a bunch of other nonsense. Does anyone know if you can build a reasonably stock skylark out of this kit, or is it "modified" only?

The original AMT 3 in 1 still exist but just like all Buicks there not cheap. I have a couple kits.

So I went ahead and bought the modified stocker kit. I am regretting it. To make this thing right, I am going to need the resin body, plus a donor 66 A Body for a decent interior, street tires, etc. The bumpers are also not right, the headlights have been blocked off... It would take a huge amount of work to "restore" this heap. May as well save myself the hassle and buy the full Modelhaus kit.

The underbody on the Modified Stocker actually seems fine to me. Looks like the bottom of my car. But the fools have cut the wheelwells waaaaay too high for their stupid dirt tires, there's no passenger seat, back seat is "sheet metal", headlights are blocked off...

I just don't understand why AMT would have done this. Makes an already "hard to sell" model kit even harder.

 

I moddifyed the body of the 55 Skylark mod stocker. filling in the wheel wells to a more stock appearance. Took the Chassis from the monogram 66 GTO. It takes some work but it can be done.

Yes, you can use another GM '66/67 donor car for some parts, sanding the seats and door panels flat then re-work them using styrene strips would be the easiest way to go. No, you won't find a stock kit in most of our beloved Buick years, there wasn't the demand for them when they first made all of these cars. The '66 Wildcat kit has some parts that would be similar but it's still going to take a ton of work.

 

I know for a fact there's a 67 skylark you could use a 66-67 kits and make one good model.

 

Stampy, Last nite, while looking at some boring HWs cars, I managed to score the 66 Skylark kit on the right. It wasnt what I'd call cheap, but I'd been hoping to find a kit. On the left is the AMT Craftsman kit in green I've had for awhile. They came with sealed hoods. Kinda like a promo, but sold as a kit. This one was glued together, and taken back apart. Although everything appears ok, the tabs for the window, interior, and chassis are broke. Doesnt hurt anything cause its just a glue back together fix, just telling you. Since I bought the kit last night, I'll sell you the Craftsman kit for $40. Or.... vintage Matchbox or HW trade??

 

How bad do you want an unbuilt AMT kit? These kits are very hard to find and buy at a reasonable price. I have several kits of which I will sell. 1-kit in box has a few small parts missing and no instructions.$120.00 I have one complete kit, even bigger bucks. I think I have two that are disassembled that were built and painted at one time. No boxes or instructions, strictly builder cars. If interested I'll check and make sure of just exactly what I have. These are all in storage.

 

You might want to try a google search for something like " Resin scale model kits" after you get some results you can narrow your parameters to "1960's Buick Kits" I was into the hobby in a big way a few years back and found that there are a lot of resin kits available for some of the lesser known cars. I found a 68 or 69 GS (resin kit), I had a 68 GS 400 convertible that was going to be a project car but then the kids came along and the car sat. I couldn't stand to see it rot so I sold it. Any way, back on topic......there is a model building forum that I belong to that can also be a great resource for kit building.
