Even if it craps out en route, go as far as you can and it will be cheaper to ship. Never too late for an adventure even if it isn't the smartest thing to do. If you do ship it, Check out rail. I had my Benz sent from Vancouver on the West coast to Montreal for $1,000. ($750. USD.)

If I had the time I'd do it in a heartbeat. I bought the Riv much the same way. Flew into chicago on a 79.00 one way plane ticket. Paid a cab 100.00 to the guys house with a suitcase full of tools and parts. The car hadnt been driven in years. Got it fired up, backed out of the garage and headed for a oil change place. got the works. moved onto a brake place. had the shoes adjusted out until I had good peddle. After a nights sleep in a flea bag hotel headed south. It was Jan and 10*F. no heat in the car. Just set the cruise and rolled. Got south of Ky the first day. stopped for the night and made it back early afternoon the second day with 0 issues. Got stopped an hour N of the house. cop said my car looked like it could be running drugs. LOL Baffone!

To be fair it was several small citys south of the airport and I did have the guy waiting for me in the pick up area with a sign. He also stopped for me to get a new battery and a can of gas on the way.
LOL No cup holders in a 68 Riv! However I did stop at a truck stop and pick up a 12V heater that was designed to set on the dash and defrost he windshield. Kept blowing the lighter fuse so I wired it directly to the battery and stuffed it up under the drivers seat. While cruising I kept my feet tucked up under there. It really wasnt to bad during the day and the farther S. I got the warmer it was in the car.

That was the thing I hated about non AC cars; after a while the radiant heat took over through the firewall and under the floor from the exhaust (especially on a chevelle I had with headers!) Yer feet would start cooking! So no heat was a bad blower relay, or heater control valve? Didja land at Ohare or Midway? ws

I once drove a 64 Max Wedge Sport Fury with TTI headers to Piedmont Dragway to host the Ramchargers drag team in a large tent that I rented. It was a blistering day for the month of May. On the way back I smelled something seriously burning. The bottoms of my tennis shoes became molten. My burning feet were part of the smell.

I had a 60 Olds like that. The engine was so carbonned up it was timed so retarded to almost running backwards. At -40 F it would be so hot inside that all the glass was clear and the rubber on my shoes started to melt. All it had was either full-on heat or full-on vent. In summer that car was not drive-able.

I hate to say it guys but I fear this deal is going to fall apart. I sent the guy a dep more than 2x's what he asked for. He said he wanted a cashiers check for the bal to be presented when the car changed hands. This morning I took cash to my bank. paid extra for the check and then put in a overnight envelope to the guy that will be picking up the car for me. Also txted a pic of the check drawn on a Canadian bank (TD). Done hear anything until this evening and he calls and says his bank will hold the check 3 weeks and he cant wait that long. Then he puts his wife on the phone and Im reading between the lines that she feels Im trying to rip them off or something. Demands a money transfer or cash at the time of exchange or I can retrieve my PP dep and the deal is off. Im sort of screwed seeing as the check is on its way up north along with the $ Im paying my buddy to make the trip. Hoping the bank will put a stop pay on the check and refund most of the money.
I can understand people being a bit gun shy about online transactions but I have acted in nothing but good faith here and have gone out of my way to accommodate these sellers. The owner said he used to be on this forum. User name spcl1956. Anyway, tomorrow is another day. we'll see what happens.

I posted that motel sign with the P.O.s phone number. Call him and ask him to referee. Iron Bridge is only about 30 miles west of where the new owner is. ws

Took your advise. He's gonna call the seller and see if he can calm his nerves. We'll see where this goes

You can stop payment on the cashiers check for about $30. But they may insist you buy insurance in case it still gets cashed, I just went through this. I might be able to come up with a place to drop the car in Saulte Ste. Marie, MI if that helps.

I hope the deal goes through for you. If so, there are a lot of good people in the Michigan Chapter-I’m pretty sure they’d be willing to help you or the car on the journey south. If you choose to drive it there are a lot of good folks along the way. I’m near Atlanta if you or it needs help.

    Briz,
I just went thru a similar situation but the seller insisted on a cashier`s check instead of wiring the money directly into his account!!! I explained to him that a cashier`s check can be cancelled unlike a wire transfer but he insisted on a check! He didnt want to provide his bank account number and routing number but I explained this info was clearly written on every check he writes but he still insisted on a cashiers/bank check! Ultimately I was assisted by a stand up member of the Buick world who was local. I wired my friend the money and he delivered his personal check for the balance of the transaction. So, the seller would not accept a wire transfer of the funds directly from my bank into his bank account but ultimately was comfortable with a personal check!?!?
At one point I was so frustrated I was going to walk away from the deal but things worked out eventually. Hope your deal works out too...good luck!

OK, if the guy says his bank holds the cheque for 3 weeks he's full of it, a bank draft or a cashier's cheque clears in 3 days. If it's drawn on a Canadian bank, (even a US branch or subsidiary) it's as good as cash if the security devices check out and they'll know that instantly. If they hang on to it for 3 weeks there's something else going on that's not your problem.
Just a thought, hopefully Mark can get it sorted out for you Briz.

Out of curiosity I asked my bank and this was their response. As the check must be sent to the US for clearing and processing, it’s possible that there will be a hold placed on the cheque. This hold can be between 15-30 business days.

Much of it depends on which banks are involved, larger banks like Chase tend to have quicker times, if he by chance has a small local bank then you can expect a longer period. I almost always insist on using wire transfers anymore, I have had some rather long delays with a Cashier Check and car purchases and sales in the past.

Banks anymore look at a Cashier Check pretty much the same as a regular check since they can be just as easily made and forged

Here's the latest. Mark ( Crazy Chevy) intervened and calmed the seller down. So I got vouched for and as of now the deal is still on. Went to my bank this morning with my copy of the check. The policy is to hold funds for 90 days on a cashiers check when a stop payment is put on it, unless the physical check is presented to the bank. If they have it in their possession then I get a on the spot refund as long as its not been altered or written on in any way.Seeing as the pick up / delivery of the car is set for this weekend there is not time to get the check back to me and the funds up north again.

This was my solution. I have a stash account that I toss money into over the year to cover my income taxes, property taxes and home owners ins payments. Pulled the correct amount out of that bank in cash this morning and sent a Money Gram through Walmart to my friend in Michigan. He will have the funds in cash in the morning. The check and other stuff I sent by mail should also be there tomorrow. Hopefully there will be no other snags along the way. Just for piece of mind I will try to insure the car through my collector ins company in the morning to cover it against any damages that might happen along the way. Once my buddy has it he will get a form I sent filled out by law enforcement to verify the VIN. Send that back to me along with the docs from Canada and the title. I'll then get plates and send them back up north so the car is legal.

This has been a snowball ride. Last weekend all the planets aligned. The seller drove the car to the boarder. My guy met them there with a truck and trailer. When the customs agent on the US side asked Michael why he was entering the US he responded that he was selling the car and a guy was picking it up on a trailer. Chit hit the fan. He was told that there was no way without a broker that this was going to happen. MY buddy felt as if he was about to be arrested and the agents were all over reacting like it was a national threat. After the dust settled Mike went back home with the Cat and Terry drove back south with an empty trailer. Wasted trip all around.
Got in touch with a broker on Monday. Had to fill out a packet of papers. Get a SCAC number from the government(76.00) Submitted everything. Got a Email Thursday that it was all done and good to go.(435.00) FWD the packet to Michael for him to print and take with to the boarder. Instructions are to go through the commercial lane. make sure to get a form 7501 stamped and hand the car + paperwork over to my buddy for transport. Without the 7501 I'd not be able to get it registered in the states. The Seller is taking a 2 week vacation starting today. When he's back we'll try again. Shouldn't be any issues this time. I like a challenge but this is a real PITA.
