Hello, new to the site. Looking at a 1969 GS400. Car is 1000 miles away and working from sellers photos. The Muncie casting number is 3925600 with a date code of P9T12B...those numbers seem to be correct for 1969. Trouble is I don't see a partial VIN on the casing (passenger side of the car). Does anyone have information about where I should look for the partial VIN on the tranny? Seems Chevy was stamping VIN right near the date code...perhaps Buick was stamping it some place else. Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated.
The partial VIN is vertical on the passenger side just to the right of where the tail shaft mates to the main case.
That is the problem. Here is a photo from the passenger side. The date code is stamped but no VIN. Wondering if Buick stamped it in some other location.
Yes, bignastygs...that was a typo on my part. Should be 660 not 600. The photo you posted is similar to what it have seen on other GM cars (Corvette, etc). No stamping on mine. I am looking to buy a 69 Stage 1 and want to be sure the tranny matches. The motor and rear are checking out. Perplexed about the lack of partial vin on the tranny.
My 73 GS 350 car was a factory 4 speed M21.The Vin was stamped and very obvious.I hd installed my 68 GS 400 M 20 in it for years and wanted to make sure the correct trans went with the car.Even the M20 68 trans Vin is plain as day..
Factory mistakes are made, my 68 GS block has the vin stamped on the passenger side and not the drivers side like it is supposed to.
Just to echo what Larry stated... I have found a VIN stamp (on a 69 GS, no less) on the raised area on the TOP of the Muncie. The picture you posted is from a 69 model year M-21 P=Munice 9= year T=month of assembly 12= day B= trans type (A=M-20, B= M21, C=M22) What is the build date of the car per the data tag???
My VIN wasn't exactly stamped with care, either and according to the legend Mkiley posted, mine is an M21?? I thought it came with an M20. Hmmmm...
M21 was installed in 400 / 455 cars, M20 in 350 cars. Option codes were listed as M20 for both however. Not sure why this was done. And you think your VIN looks bad.... Month of build for Muncie transmissions 1967-1974 are. A=January B=February C=March D=April E=May H=June K=July M=August P=September R=October S=November T=December
I was just informed of that 10 minutes ago. Today is not wasted - I learned something new. That VIN is a mess.
