unless painted piece is sealed in a vacuum the color will still change over time...it is not only UV light that breaks the paint down but atmosphere itself...paint believe it or not is porous and is constantly breathing...and releasing the solvents...when the paint was applied in the 70's it was only about 20% solids...the rest was solvent....

With R-M, many times they will use a different number between years, but they are the same formula. Such as code 26 Stratomist Blue is #2262 for 1970 and #2482 for 71-72 and the formulas are the same.
DuPont and PPG probably do that also.
In any case you will be spending some big bucks for that bright red b/c.:eek2:

If it was me I would buy Glasurit 55 line or R-M Diamont. It's not as expensive as DuPont and also better quality.

Alot can happen in 40 years. These codes all started the same and somewhere along the line I will bet personal bias got into the formulas.

Just talked to the paint store , they tell me that the 5118 is not available in CP only in nasson and centari. Bob you said you called Dupont and they gave you the 5118 number, Did they say that it wasn't available in CP.

All I have is a three qt formula.

    867J Red 853.1
    853J Red Orange 1138.4
    807J LS Black 1379.2
    884J LS Red Oxide 1598.1
    52320N Binder 2779.1

I would also call Dupont and see if they have a 4 oz and Gallon formula just in case. 800-338-7668 option 3 color services.

so I called Dupont and asked if they had a Chromapremier Formula and they said no....I asked is they had a Chromavsion Formula and tthey said no....but he said that 5339 is a match and there is a formula for that... they used to a few years ago go to the original paint samples and put the "camera" on them to get a formula....but according to Dupot the 5339 formula is a match to the 5118 Color

    here are the formulas

People tend to get hung up on the names of colors. My experience is that the names are usless. Doesn't matter if its Dodge/Chry/Plymouth, Ford/Merc, or Chev/Buick/Olds/Pontiac, each division had their own name for a certain color, but it is the code that counts.

I have a PPG paint mix formulas on Micro fiche here at home, and for example my 70 GS is code 75-which Buick calls Fire Red. My buddies 70 Judge is also code 75 but Pontiac calls it Cardinal Red. It is the exact same color from the factory. The mix formula is the same for both. My 70 Judge is code 48 which Pontiac called Pepper Green, but my buddies old 70 Skylark is also code 48, but Buick called it Sherwood Green Poly. Same color/same mix formula.

In a perfect world these colors would look exactly the same, but there are alot of variables in painting, plus all the different brands of paint etc. Thats they don't always look the same.

I really apreciate all of the advice and input, i finnaly got a hold of a Rep @ dupont, they had a spectracolor formula from a chip @ dupont for 70. I have the formula that he supplied. also have the 5339. Both in CP bc. Doing Sprayouts tonight. Closest one to the original Piller post Wins. Thanks Again.

I apologize for digging this up, I was hoping to contact the above member to ask how he made out with his paint formula problem. There is no option to sending him a private message. I'm having the same problems with 1970 code 75 with DuPont (now AXALTA). Anyone know another way to contact him?

Just use a modern red and tint if needed red is one of the easiest colors to tint. Just start with the Ford vermilion red would be close I bet

Use R-M Diamont or Glasurit 55 Line, both BASF products, not as expensive as AXALTA and it's a better product. I can give you the formulas for either R-M or Glasurit. Many of the real high end car builders use BASF; Chip Foose, Rad Rides By Troy, etc., etc.
