I suppose this post will not really be any help because both engines were rebuilt and decked so there are no numbers on the block deck. I decided to post anyway just in case I am looking in the wrong place or the 71 serial number is located in a different location than the 1970. So here is what I have.

1970 455 complete engine that is rebuilt but unassembled I found for sale and bought for a future project.

1971 Stage 1 complete engine that is assembled which came in a 1972 455 GS. Although the numbers are not on the block deck, the invoice from the machine shop lists the motor as a 1971 Stage 1 on the invoice. I contacted them but they said they would not have a record anymore of the serial number. I also have the rebuilt OW transmission that came with the motor.

The OW trans should have the vin stamped on it on a little pad,so that should help out significantly...

The VIN on a 72 is stamped vertically on the front RH side of the block, near the timing cover.
I was thinking on the 71 (and maybe 70) that it's stamped vertically on the front LH side of the block, behind the p/s pump.

Hey Dave this is the other Dave J. You probably do not know this but early built 71 Stage-1's used the Olds OW transmissions because of maybe a fire at the Buick trans plant. Starting in January of 71 Stage-1's went back to using BB trans. Very easy to tell what it came from by checking VIN stamp on passenger side.

I have had a few interested parties inquire if I am willing to sell the 71 engine or OW trans and also for the 1970 455. I want the person that may have the original car to have the chance to recover the drive train if possible. That's why I listed the items in Lost and Found. So I will keep a list of any interested parties on a 1st come 1st served basis. In the mean time, can any of the members help me develop some kind of fair value for these items?

    Thanks,
    George

George, Your engine Came out of a real 71 stage1 GSX that was parted out, and yes the trans also came from the same car. The matching car is long gone to crush pile........Chris

Well, since it has been veified that the 1971 car that my 1971 Stage 1 motor and 71-OW trans came out of went to the crusher some time ago, I will probably just sell it as soon as I find out what it is worth. BTW I did find the vin # on the block due to the great post from DaWildcat and TriShieldPerf. The vin number is 041Z102043 and the trans tag is 71-OW 216 1217. This Lost and Found is a great service. I hope everyone can find their motor. Good Luck!

    1971 Stage 1 Engine, 71-OW Trans, 1972 GS 455 Body

    Leo,

I have no idea yet what all the parts are worth yet. I suppose the price is all relative. Like anyting else, it just depends on who needs what and how bad. I have the 1971 Stage 1 engine and transmission which was verified by the Marco at the Stage 1 Registry as being from a Stage 1 GS. Then the trans came with the car. Both are now sitting in a fully restored (frame off) 1972 GS 455 in original Cortez Gold and white vinyl top.

I recently signed a contract to have an "real time" online auction built for the sale of Muscle Cars; Buicks and others. The project is a big investment. The site is not yet ready but I should be registering cars and buyers within the next 60 days. The auction will be high quality and not at all like eBay. The domain will be CrowneHunter.com. The only reason I would consider selling this GS or any of its parts is to invest the profit into the auction project. I want to stay involved in the industry but I am getting to old to be lifting heavy parts, fixing cars etc. Anyway, I will post the prices when I figure it all out.

George if you contact George Z from Gm of Canada you will find the car is a canadian car and came from a 71 stratomist blue GSX back when I didn't know much this car was wrapped around a pole in North Van and I bought all salvageable parts of it, hood tach ,wing, powertrain etc. , then she was towed to the crusher. I still got the cowl data tag around here somewhere.

Hi Bill, nice to hear from you. Thanks for that history, it really helps. Good thing you have all your cars inside with the winter you guys had. Get any new cars recently? May be in the market. I sent you a PM.

there are serial numbers stamped on the back lft corner on the lip above the pan bolts,a light metal tag is not sufficiant for insurance companies and police departments
