Anyone out there upgrade from a factory Carter 4 barrel on their 340 sbb? Trying to see what other people have tried and what would work the best. Thanks in advance for any insight.
I put an Edelbrock carb on a 67 340. The Edelbrock linkage hit the intake so I used a spacer to raise the carb so the linkage would clear, this one http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.-Gasket/72...MIir7ghI662gIVW7nACh2oJwvJEAQYASABEgJKXvD_BwE But you could use a solid one also. Also on another 67 340 I used a Quadrajet, using this adapter, or one like it http://www.michiganmotorz.com/edelb...MIz6_u9oy62gIVlrjACh2ttwkUEAQYBSABEgK2SPD_BwE Note THE BOLT PATTERN ON YOUR EXISTING 4BBL MANIFOLD IS THE SAME AS A QUADRAJET. The quadrajet will bolt directly to your manifold, but you need the adapter to allow the large rear throttle plates to open. The quadrajet worked great for me. On both carbs you will need to fabricate a bracket or whatever you need to hook up your linkage to the switch pitch converter, if you still have it. There are people who can rebuild your existing AFB and make it work well. One is Ken at Everyday Performance. He had done one for me and it was great. He does a lot of carbs but Quadrajets are his specialty. He is a member here and is highly thought of. http://www.everyday-performance.com/
I put an Edelbrock AVS Thunder series #1806 on mine. Fine tuning it now. Works great. Currently changing it to a bit leaner.
What's wrong with the Carter? Unless it's worn completely out, it will probably run better on your 340 than anything else you put on it. Of course, 50 years is a long time for some parts, and sometimes things are just worn out. The problem with an aftermarket carb shows up if you have a switch-pitch converter. You have to fabricate a bracket for the microswitch.
Quadrajet Power can do a nice rebuild of your carb with performance tweaks. Would be better choice considering that it’s closer metering to your engine then a universal replacement carb that will need jetting changes for your needs. And then as mentioned making a change to get trans linkage to work
Thank you for all your insight, I have the original Carter AFB which needs a complete overhaul so I was leaning towards something a bit more modern like the Edelbrock AVS2 #1906 (650 cfm). Anyone out there have any experience with this carb?
Haha, didn't think about that when I was painting it. Just wanted it to be a little different from factory without being too over the top.
The Avs carb will not be tuned or jetted for your engine, it’s a universal carb. And I would believe Mark at Quadrajet Power can add a linkage to your carb for a 200. Don’t forget that the overdrive does drops rpm too much with a 2 series rear end . So mpg and power could suffer
I have the Edelbrock AVS 1806 which I am currently fine tuning as it is a bit rich. I bought that one so I'd have the correct linkage for my 200-4r transmission. I went with 3.36 gears and posi and couldn't be happier. I did have to use a carb spacer and grind a small spot down on my intake. Just put the insurance on the car today so now I can give it another shake down run and see how my carb tuning is going. It's very easy to adjust! Here's a write up on my carb swap plus the rest of my shenanigans. http://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/1967-skylark-nearing-completion.228896/page-4
I did end up having to lean the carb out. I went 8% leaner based on the chart. Kind of wish I would have just bought the jets and rods to do that rather than the whole kit. Could have saved a couple bucks!
Send it to Tom Telesco (TelRiv) on this board. The Carter is better than the newer Edelbrook, my opinion.
