340 into a 83 regal wagon? This swap shouldn't be too different from the 455/350 swap should it? I'm planning on doing it soon once I finish cleaning up my 340 Has anyone actually done this?
It already has a BOP TH350 in it and exhaust won't be a problem either... Just wondering about the oil pan hitting the frame and the motor mounts...
That thing has got... style !!!:gp: That should be a routine V8 Buick swap. Let us know on your progress,Don
yeah i swapped the front clip on there myself with only minor difficulties, they didn't make any like that. I was planning on putting a turbo grand nat motor in there but my uncle backed out of the deal....he was gonna give me his for it. Right now the plan is to put the 340 in it, do the body work, paint it (white (it's original color)) and try to sell it by the summer. I'll keep everyone updated. Thanks for the positive comments...
Keep it a dark color:Smarty: and that 340 is just as cool as a 3.8-t motor Also, leave the clear lenses and use the sport mirrors, that would be sick!!!
Yep, already got a pair of sport mirrors...:TU: Black would be cool, but it doesn't quite match the blue interior....maybe a dark/navy blue would be cool. Still leaning towards white, but nothings set in stone. Thanks again for the complements...
Nice looking Wagon, as far as I know that is the only 340/G-wagon blend! I've seen the white, and I've seen the blue on G-wagons. Toss in a vote for the dark blue...
if it was a v6 car i am pretty sure you can use v6 mounts and drop the 340 right in how did the nose fit? looks kool
Well, As soon as I started working on freshening up this motor, it got put back on the backburner....I bought another car....oops Anyway, The front clip bolted up fine, but the doors didn't line up with the fenders...so... I had to do some custom work...:blast: <- That's not a gun....that's a welder....I went down to the yards and cut about 6" off of the front of a pair of doors and welded them ontop of the old doors....I'll be investing in some body filler stock in the near future.
New Wagon Owner, '83 Regal Here's a copy of an e-mail I sent my friends Ed and Scott. Any comments? "Drove to Monmuth, west of Salem, with son Aaron. Lady lives in very trashy place, car was filthy, been sitting out for who knows how long. Odometer shows 85,xxx. She said the guy she bought it from said it once belonged to Barbara Roberts, ex-Oregon State governer. (yeah, right) Body very straight, no dents or scratches. Lots of surface rust but nothing through to the metal. Needs paint bad. Glass all good, bumpers straight, will shine up, other chrome not so good. Doors shut OK except for drivers, needs pin replaced, maybe hindge, and adjusted. Grill, headlight bezzles, marker lights, bumper fillers all very good. Has roof rack, chrome starting to pit. Tailgate shuts OK but not tight, maybe needs some work. Interior maroon and decent. Power front seat been recovered once with cloth, getting thin but no rips. Back seat vinyl and very good. Dash is OK, filler behind windshield cracked. Plastic panel just below 'A' piller broken and missing. Carpet very muddy-wet-stained but could possible be cleaned up. Headliner sagging, been pinned up, must be replaced. Rear cargo area in very good shape, needs metal portions painted. Didn't check if windows roll up and down. Door panels very good. Most moldings around doors should be replaced. Engine is 231ci V6 and is an '87 Goodwrench replacement, says so with sticker on valve cover. Starts and runs OK, has off idle hesitation. Died once while test driving but ran fine otherwise - not much power. Very dirty engine compartment. Hood won't stay up, used a stick. Oil not too dirty and up to top of fill mark. Needs new exhaust but no exhaust smoke I could see. Trans shifts very good, no slipping. Don't know what model it is. Tires good, about 75%, on original wheels with Buick spoke hub caps, one center cap missing. Brakes very good, peddle right up to the top, stops fine. Plates good til 12/08. Offered her $400, she said nope, had to have $500. Long pause, then she said "I'll split it with ya, $450". I said "OK, deal". Had clear title, signed it over, off we went. Stopped for gas in Rickreall. Drives good, steering nice and tight, goes straight. Could use new shocks, had anoying rattle somewhere in back cargo area. Did some research, seems these are very rare and desirable in Buick circles. Don't know how many were made but were only made two years, '82 and '83. Don't know really what I'll do with it, just clean it up for now. Probably try to fix the door and rebuild carb, see if that helps. Might even put a Maaco paint job on it. Scott, I know you'd like to see me put that big block in it. Maybe......but that's down the road quite a bit. My dream would be to put in a turbo motor! Whatdasay, Ed? "
There was one up on the board for sale in October too. I saw another one up in Put-in-bay, OH this summer too. I thought they only made 1500 of the Regal wagons. I had a 67 special with a 300. We swapped it for a '68 350 with no problems and we reused the frame pads. It seems to me that it should work to go 3.8 to a 340. Those 340's are very intriguing. They are a strange Buick anomaly.
Just freshened up the motor, going to start the swap sometime soon (hopefully within the week). Here are some pictures of a "nice" 340. (had to go with ford red though , since it was on autozone's shelf. oh well, still looks good.)
the ford red looks pretty close.engine looks great oh....... ditch the fram filter, those things are JUNK!!!!!!
