I've reached a part of my disassemby where I hit a wall. This is my first disassembly. What would you do to get this timing chain and gears off. I have 3 jaw puller loaner from my parts store, also what is a good way to turn the engine over at this point. also how do i pull the key out the end of the crankshaft ,, my picture would not load so i pulled this from the net, but that were im at.
    thank you

No puller needed . Unbolt the distributer gear and remove fuel pump encentric. Noting directions of both. Gear and chain should pull forward . You will have to slide lower gear on crank forward some too.

Leave crank keyway in. The cam keyway can be knocked out with chisel and hammer

While reading this, one problem I had was that the cam got stuck pulling out of block.
Just had to rotate to get it unstuck, but puzzled me for far too long.

Thanks Ted, I will keep that in mind. I'll be doing what you guys have advised this weekend.

Any tool you can recommend or technique for me to turn over the engine?
    Thanks
    Ronnie

Your chain looks new. I take 3 long bolts and screw them in balancer slide it on crank to turn motor.

it will hit a rod or 2 so you may need to turn crank to move rod out of the way of cam lobes.

    X2 what Dan said.
If you put balancer on timing mark 0, unless your 180 degrees off, cam will come right out.

So thanks Alec the gears and chain slide right off just like you said. I noted position and then off came out the cam after I lifted the lifters out of the way of the lobes, thanks Ted for saving me time..

It took a while to get those pictures posted but i got the hang of it. So this is where I'm at now. I read above, but I don't understand what Dan is trying to tell me with the 3 bolt technique, can you please let me know because won't I need to turn the engine some while getting the pistons out. Thanks alot everyone, I'm learning alot. Screenshot_20170416-000219.png Screenshot_20170416-000219.png

Just put the big bolt back into the front of the crank and turn the crank over with a ratchet..

Factory type timing gear. 68-69 type rocker arms. But looks as though the passage for oil sump has been opened up. Which is good. My have been worked on before. Which Pistons does it have

    Thanks Sean will do.

Alec, I'll let you know when they come out.

I have no idea what bolt was in because I got it like that with the harmonic balancer off , can I use the removal bolt from the kit in the picture top right.. I ask because it protrudes out a bit Screenshot_20170416-111716.png Screenshot_20170416-103802.png

You should not need a puller on balancer. If you do something is damaged. Those are higher compression Pistons. About 9.4 with the factory steel head gasket

Pistons look like the original stock 71 cast pistons that came out of mine. Deep dish.

Mine in a 69 with the rp code. In your picture is the 70's piston on the left. I'm going outside to work on it, I'll let you all know how it goes...

Two days ago I put that big bolt in as far as I could and tried to rotate her and she didn't want to so I stoped. But I'll try again. Thanks alot guys.

Put some trans fluid in all the cylinder holes and it will help free up the pistons.

Yes the 70 is on the left. Try turning with the flexplate and a pry bar on the teeth.it is slow but should turn. May have a tight piston pin if engine has sat for awhile.
