I've got a box of 980-16 springs sitting around... but last I checked the inner damper rubs on the valve guide seals.
What are you guys using that require NO machine work and will work with stock stuff (keepers, etc) and the stock type valve stem seals (pictured)?

Cam will be a comp 252. It was free and still in the packaging. Low comp. '71 motor. Just a runner. Just need better than stock in terms of springs.

If you want better springs and this is your cam, you should cut the seal bosses and install better seals. Otherwise, leave it alone.
In other words, you don't need other than stock springs.

Basically. Its got .439 lift tho. And it was free. The springs are 48 years old and need/should be replaced. What are the specs for the stock springs?

Sorry, Can't help you, threw all stock parts in the trash. Pistons, cams, rods, springs, timing gearsets, valves, etc.

    alec296 i need another buick

Yea, take the chance with the stock springs. Put the money in to the engine you really want to build. Or use what you had in the other engine.

This is a temporary engine. It's bone stock. 48 years old. But, my last one was supposed to be temporary and I ended up putting 13,000 miles on it. It's coming apart for inspection (sat for 6 years), new gaskets, bearings and rings. I suppose I can use my 942 -16 springs from my exploded engine... But theyre a tad big in diameter. And have well... 18,500 miles on them.

Use those soft 48 year old springs. You'll have basically no chance of lobe meltdown.....

tbh not the response i was expecting.

ive broken a cam in with no oil pressure and the cam turned out fine...

i suppose i can use just the heads off my '70 SP and have em done up if nothing was slammed into them when the rod let go.
