UPDATE - Link to list to get in line to purchase: http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/3d-printed-mirror-gasket-project.334133/ ------------------------------- I've always figured the 70-72 Buick sport mirrors and 70-81 Camaro sport mirrors were the same except for the gaskets. If you used the Camaro gaskets, the mirrors leaned in too much. A few years back someone, maybe Cars or Poston, can't remember, sold gaskets that worked. I bought a pair. I have a set of Camaro mirrors I want to put on my 71 but gaskets were hard to find. Enter my buddy with a 3D printer. I brought my old one in and he modeled it up and printed me one to test with. Now, this one is printed at low resolution and of a material called PLA which is not UV stable. He can print them in ABS if there is interest. What would a pair of these be worth? Ignore my poor photography and my very old paint job GS. First 3 pics are of the brand new, 3D printed, low resolution test gasket. Fourth pic is of my car with my old gasket for comparison Fifth pic is of new gasket in same shot Next three are of my mirror with the new gasket from different angles Last two are of comparison of old and freshly printed Comments and snide remarks?
I agree that there is a need. I ended up putting my originals back on my car even though one is cracked. I have no clue what people would pay for them. I hope you start making them!!!! Jim
Did the pictures show enough detail to see how it is going to fit? I'm not looking to make much money, if any, on these but I don't own the printer or the raw materials so I'll see what he thinks. He told me this one took about an hour to print. A nicer, high res one should be just a little slower. Raw material is a spool of ABS filament. I'll keep folks posted now that the prototype looks good.
Hey Greg, it looks great! Biggest mistake people do is use wrong ones and mirrors don’t set level. 2 thumb’s up to you..........
I think $25-30 per set is reasonable .. .. I've been thinking of doing this for years for the 68/69 mirror gaskets. If you get this going, I can prolly provide 68/69 samples for modelling
Isn't there also a need for standard Sport Mirror gaskets and maybe to a lesser extent, even chrome mirror gaskets? If so, maybe your friend would be interested in making them too?
Awesome! He's going to do a set at the higher resolution in ABS, which is able to withstand being exposed to sunlight, and I'll post up pics of those once we have them. He's going to do a mirror image (pun intended) so the angles are correct on each side. Once we are setup, I'll start taking some orders. Looks like I could already sell about 6 sets hold tight! If you have something you want duplicated, please take pics of it and send them to me via PM and I'll show them to him to see if it is something he wants to tackle. If he agrees, we'll work out getting the original to model from and give it a shot.
I'm thinking antenna nuts for the '66/67 "A" bodies would probably be something people would want repopped.
