Just out of curiosity has anyone ran 410 gears in there Buick on the street. I would like to get your thoughts about them in first and second gear (street tire/ drag radials). Not worried about RPM at 60mph because my combination will handle it. Thanks Ya'll :beer

In the 80's I worked for a local speed shop as a mechanic and was into Chevy's. I ran a 65 SS Impala with a built up 327, 4spd., and 4:10 12 bolt possi. I'm new to the Buick world but the 4:10 for me was a little steep for the street especially on the highway. That's just my experience.

I bought my 200 4r (BRF code - 87 GN) this weekend. It is a 47,000 original with shift kit installed. 350 motor to be in the 400hp range according to the information Jim burek has given to me.

I did not like my 373's (?) with stock wheels/tires, 455 eng., 350 trans., on the highway this weekend.

Wasn't as bad with bigger wheels/tires. Be lots better with OD!!!

    Phil,

Have you asked Jim B. what gear he would recomend for you combo?

I use to run my car with a 350 and 4.10 gears. It was fine arond town but it sucked on the highway. Better have a killer cooling system, including an oil cooler for long trips in the Texas summer. I drove mine down the Bowling Green, what a trip. 7 hours at 3500-3800 rpm  . I only passed one truck the whole trip, and even that didn't really count since he passed me back  . I twisted an axle while racing down there and drove all the way back with a slight wobble in one of the rear tires. Of course I was young back then. :TU:

Good luck on your build, sounds cool.

    Phil,

    I have a 700R4 w/ 4.10's out back in my 65 and it is too much for the Quick Times Pro's on the street/track. I would suggest going w/ 3.55 or .73's w/ that 200R4. Remember the 200R4 has a steeper 1st gear than either a 350 or 400.

    Good luck.

    4.10's

    Phil:

    Remember that the 200 has a steeper first gear: 2.75 as opposed to 2.52 in a Th-350 or 2.48 in a 400.

With this in mind, a shorter rear gear will not hinder you as much out of the hole, and give you that much more on the highway.

All this from a guy that had 4.88's in his daily driver (years ago).

I am trying to decide What gear to go with. It will either be 373 or 410's

In overdrive the car will act as if it has 274 gears if a 4.10 is installed.

with 373's it will be 249

This is taking 4.10(.67) = Overdrive Final ratio it is a 33% reduction.

    Phil,
I to am debating the gear ratio for my 65 Skylark. I will have the 300V8, 4spd. when I'm done. I'm confused on your figures. With the 4:10 you say you'll have 2:74 with the overdrive. With the 3:73 you say you will have 2:49 with overdrive. Isn't 2:74 a higher gear ratio than 2:49? And isn't 4:10 a lower gear ratio than 3:73? Just trying to understand the math thing. Thanks!

I ran my 455/400 combo on a 4.10 for a while, street driving was good... 1st gear???? What gear...lol. the 400 basically only used it when racing. My car would shift out of 1st right after taking off (normal driving).

I myself would go with it again, only I'd do some kind of OD for Highway use.... even though I rarely go onto the HWY.

Thats correct Tim, With a low gear (4.10) The car will leave very well. As the transmission goes through the gears the over all rear gear is reduced. and when the overdrive is initiated The gear reduction will give the the higher ratio this reduces stress on the whole drive line as RPM will be lower and also the capability of going faster due to availability RPM remaining.

Usually the Higher number is the lower gear ratio.

4.10 on the street with anything less than a 28" tire would be awful on gas mileage, with $2.00 + gas around I would stick with 3:73's or less (numerically)- Mike D.

I am not two worried about the gas milage and the overdrive will take care of most of it anyway if I was to drive it for some distance. Also I don't plan on being in first gear the whole time just for a few seconds.

    Hey Phil,
I guess the confusion is it looks to me like you are getting a higher gear ratio out of a lower geared rearend. :Do No: :beer :Dou:

    This is correct.

The Transmission Overdrive 4th gear reduces the overall ratio between the trans and rearend. making the gear higher.

I've 4.10's waiting to be installed in my car with a th-350. Sometimes you have to give up top speed for awsome acceleration. :3gears: Sure it'll only do 60 but it gets there in a hurry. I'd say just do it and have fun, thats what i'm going to do. Jeramie

    Phil--

I used a tank of gas driving to Temple and back. I have 3.64 gears... no overdrive, of course. I don't have a tach, but I'll bet I'm over 2500 at highway speed-- maybe way over.
