It's been a long time since I've been on V8Buick, my 65 Wildcat is still sitting in a reefer trailer waiting for me to take it out. A good fiend of mine just bought a 68 Wildcat Custom and we put it on the scale and it's a tank. How much does that 430 weigh? We took it for ride and apart from a major bog (almost no accelerator pump action) runs hard, smooth and quiet. We have the timing set at 0, what do they like? Just looking for interesting facts, figures, likes and dislikes of the 430. Now that he's got his 68, I'll be forced to bring out my 65..... and maybe have a drag race
Around 616 lbs give or take like any BBB. The ignition timing will depend on exactly what distributor it has in it now, and don't say it's all original because you can't know that unless you owned the car from new, or you checked the distributor part number which is 1111285. Lots of things get changed out in a 50+ year old car. The original distributor had 30-34* of mechanical advance, so 0* (TDC) is all you can run. The right way is to set the maximum advance with the VA disconnected. If you know how to use a timing light, it is easy.
I've had my 430 out twice, it's 600 lbs easy. The stock big-port iron heads are somewhere in the vicinity of 50-60 lbs each. The iron intake is like a 45 lb gym weight plate. Didn't remove the crank, but it's iron, too. Iron & more iron. I-R-O-N...iron. Did I mention it's iron.
Thank you very much. I thought it was more. Picked the Engine up in the mid 80´s. In an Volvo Amazon Wagon from thè 60`s. The Headlights was in the top of the Trees, all the way home. Maybe four hours drive, one way. Goran
Thanks Larry and everyone else. I was waiting for an email notification and assumed I had started a boring thread when I didn't get one. I'll check to see how much mechanical advance I get .
