Got a 455 block out of Michigan, trying to ID it. It's a 1231738 casting, and the cavity behind the timing gear says "70". However, there are no VINS on the left cyl bank or on the front cover surface, and no engine codes on the drivers deck. The date code is F-5 ((June 5th?) On the deck between the 1-3 cyls, it is stamped 7X, on the deck between the 5-7 cylinders it is stamped 6X. on the passender deck between the 2-4 cyls it is stamped 2H, and between the 6-8 cyls is 46. I expected this to be a SF motor, it has small oil passages. This doesnt seem to be a production block - no engine codes, no VIN and an oddball production date - too early for the production run of a 70 or 71 model year (?), and on a Saturday in 1971. Would 70 engine production run through June? What am I looking at? Pre-production block? Post production block? Service replacement?
It's an early production 70 block if it had the small 1/2" oil passages. Mid yo late production they changed to the 5/8" oil passages. Here's a parts casting code ID chart for you.
Got all that, but I guess my question is specifically : has anyone ever seen a 70 block that has no VIN, no engine code and those random stampings on the deck?
OK, thats good to know - do we know it's history? came out of a low mile car type of thing, etc..? I guess I'm looking to find out was this a common thing in production 70 (or earlier) vehicles?
I got a 72 block with vin number but it's got a bunch of jibberish codes on the oil pan rail, what's that all about??
Lol. I havei have a dozen or so sitting around......i only really know anything about 3 of them .....the old racecar motor, the current racecar motor, and NOS from gm block to become the next racecar motor,,,,,, and for some silly reason I'm going to go buy 2 more tomorrow lol
