    It sounds pretty good Rossco!!
Looks like excellent throttle response too!

Don’t see the throttle linkage on the right side very often, is it just setup that way for your test stand or will it be on the right side in the Land Rover?

    Thanks for the updates.....

    @Philip66

Thanks for the kind comments. The throttle response is crisp, in fact I cant believe it's running a carb as it feels more like EFi. I was also pleased to see a healthy 17inHg at idle and 45psi on the oil gauge. I know a lot of people dont like Rhoads lifters but for me they work.

You're correct about the carb orientation, it'll swap when it gets fitted to the Land Rover.

I'm planning on getting this to a guy here in the UK for an engine dyno session. If you'd like to see an Audi Coupe with what I think at the last count was 2000bhp then check out John's website http://www.john-sleath.com/

Sounds great! Realize though that there is no torque converter full of fluid attached to the crank so yeah, throttle response will be awesome.:) Also, that double pumper carburetor will enhance that as well.

I just swapped my 10" converter for one of Jim's 9.5" converters. The 10" one weighed 37 lbs empty, the 9.5 was 26. When I was at the track this past September, I swapped on my AED 1000 in place of the Q-jet. The first time I went to move the car, I almost hit the garbage can in front of me:D. The throttle was that sensitive. That's an 11 lb reduction in rotational weight on the crank. You have no weight.

Good point Larry, I must weigh the SP converter and see what it comes in at.

Empty, it might come in at 40 lbs, or close to it. They are heavier than a fixed pitch converter.

    Guy I knew had a bone-stock 454 smogger motor + out-of-the-box Holley carb in a '67 Camaro 4-speed.

He put the GM lightweight nodular-iron flywheel on that car. About 13 pounds.

There were two ways to leave a stop sign: Bogging or actually stalling; or rear wheels burning rubber. No such thing as smooth throttle response.

Yeah, that car was a lot of fun.

    A quick update.

The 455 goes on the engine dyno on Friday of this week. http://www.john-sleath.com/

As a way of thanking everyone on this Forum I'm offering a $50 Summit giftcard to the person that guesses the HP and Torque figures for the engine. In the event no-one gets it spot on I'll award the giftcard to the closest torque figure, that makes it a little more interesting.

Well gents, the results are in.

    I'll put the printouts up tomorrow..........but the figures are 464hp @ 5300rpm and 518lbs/ft @ 4100rpm with 450lbs/ft from 2000rpm.

Not quite what some were expecting but about what my research said this combo should do given the cam is torque biased and set 4 degrees retarded.

AFR shows it a little lean (14) up to 2400rpm and down in the 12's by 2650rpm. I'll be talking to AED Carbs to see if this can be remedied. Maybe a bigger pump shot?

The timing was set at 12° initial and 32° total. We tried varying this but these settings proved to be the best. The engine didn't like any more or any less.

For those that are interested I'll upload the video to YouTube.

And finally if Brandon would like to pm me his email address I'll arrange for the Summit gift card to be delivered.

Very surprising. I thought it was virtually impossible to make under 500 HP with TA aluminum heads, 10:1 compression and a decent cam.

    Yes, I was somewhat surprised.

    Here are the printouts

From the printouts you can see that from 5300rpm power is dropping off and from 4350 the BSFC is showing that efficiency is dropping off, all of which makes me wonder if the carb is too small.

And for those that find an engine on the dyno exciting.....

The horsepower dropping off after 5300 is ok, you may be running out of valve spring. Although the cam seems a little small for 10.3 compression and your heads but you may want the torque monster in a land rover. My concern is the lumpy torque curve it doesn't just flatten out it drops a couple of numbers then straighten out.

@Brandon Cocola I agree, at the moment I've not reinstalled the inner valve springs.

I still think though that the carb may be too small which could account for the dips in the torque curve. I'm talking to John Dickey at AED to see if they have any suggestions

Put the inner springs in and give it another run.

My 470 loves the AED 1000HO I have. It's worth 1.5-2 10's in the 1/4 mile and 2 MPH trap speed over my 800 Q-jet. I only use it at the track though.

You need to put those inner springs in. Those are good heads, and cam. It should make at least 500 HP.

Edouards motor made 509 HP/540 TQ out of 448 CID, a smaller cam, and a B4B intake.

You have an SP1 intake. There is way more in that motor.
