What drives me crazy is that I already tuned my street demon for high altitude, I even tried the smaller jet of my tuning kit and the smelly exhaust and poor gas mileage is still there

Yesterday started disassembling the Olds Quadrajet, is really really dirty but at least looks in good shape, I think is going to be ready to test on the car in one week or maybe two, it all depends on how long takes the rebuild parts to arrive

Just for the heck of it. I got to ask...Have you checked the strength of your spark?

Without a catalytic converter, your exhaust will always smell and modern ethanol fuels will leave soot on the tailpipe.

I'm using a HEI distributor but I was asking the same to myself. I've always checked the "spark strength" with a screwdriver inside a spark wire and trying to see how much gap it will tolerate between the screwdriver and the alternator housing before spark disappears. Is there a more "technical" way to check it ?

I know "some" smell is fine on these cars but it smells too way much compared to other cars I've had, for example If I try to smell the pipe it will burn my eyes

Just a small update regarding this thread.

I was also suspecting a valve train issue so yesterday installed a new set of valve springs, adjusted my pushrods and I think something improved, now I'm getting 20.5" of vacuum idling 750RPM (before wwas 17-18.5), the idle is a lot smoother and some of the gas smell in the exhaust is gone.

About the QJ I'm rebuilding: I already installed bushings in the primary blades, cleaned the carb with paint thinner and I'm also going to clean it with an ultrasound machine. I ordered a set of precision drill set to clean every tube and conduct specially the idle tubes. Hopefully I'm going to start the assembling this week
