My guess is it the 430 it came with was replaced with a 455. Post a picture
maybe somebody will give you an idea what year. Smogger or nonsmogger.

The Riviera and Riviera GS had only one engine option in 1969 and that was
a 430ci. The original paint (color) and engine/trans add a lot to the value of the car. Numbers matching. It's a classic coupe that's a bit different from the
GS 400/455 price range, i see that Riviera sells best (at high value) when they are factory stock, numbers matching and have the GS option. Floorshifter, Chrome Ralley wheels, add a lot in value.
But to say something about the price, i need to see pictures of it.

actually, your text looks fine to me. as an Amurican, i read your first statement as "the Riv only had one engine available in 1969" which parses the same way as Erik's restatement. it would require a VERY hair splitting reading of your sentence to come to another conclusion although i suppose Erik might be technically correct. as for me, i consider the 'base engine' to be an 'option'....:idea2:

What numbers match what? There should be the last 6 digits of the VIN stamped somewhere on the block. That is what you need to check to verify matching numbers.

Contrary to what a lot of you May have read, there were a very few 1969 Rivieras made with 455s. I know this for a fact because my Dad had one he bought new in Oklahoma City. He owned the car its entire life until it was totaled in an accident in 1976. It was white with a black vinyl top, white seats and black carpet. It was most certainly from the factory a 455 ci as the the sticker on the breather stated so. I was 8 years old when he bought it. Up until this very day, it was the ONLY ONE I’d ever seen or heard of that was equipped with the 455. Imagine my surprise!

So if you have one... HANG ON TO IT! ITS OBVIOUSLY VERY RARE!

    This thread is from 2007!

So it was a 455 based on the sticker on the air cleaner? :D

The 455 didn't come out till the following year, 1970

By December 69, they were already 4 months into building 1970 Rivieras. The factory stopped building 1969 models by the end of July 1969

So whats the scenario to get a 69 Riv with a 455? Besides someone on the assambly line on LSD.

Contrary to a lot of comments, the 455ci V8 was indeed available for the 1969 Riviera, albeit by special order. I know for a fact that my Dad’s Riviera that he purchased new from a dealership in Oklahoma City came with a 455. I know of only a handful of other people that said they knew someone or their parents had one too.

The stock/factory offering was the 430, but for a “few bucks more” and patience for the delivery, you could indeed get the 455. 2DC47140-C64B-44CB-9F24-3E8BC3B949D4.jpeg
That’s my dad in 1969 with his 455 powered 1969 Buick Riviera.
