Paint was thinned to whole milk consistency. two coats, 600 wet, two coats, 1000 wet, two coats 1500 wet, 1 coat and Meguiars polish.

There are some scratches visible, some small lines and other minor flaws. All in all, we think it is pretty good. Much better than what was there and the learning curve was fun.

Looks pretty good! I have a bunch of questions for you, so bear with me if you will.
Is the paint hard at all? Do you think it will be durable? Do you think there is more shine in there with a little more buffing? I'd like to see some more pictures if you get a chance. Thanks for sharing the info with us.

I bought a case of red Interlux brightside to paint my Alfa with (the originale policia hate my guts). I haven't popped open a can yet, so I don't know about the thinning ratios. I've heard good things about the Interlux marine paint.
As for scratches, I noticed it took several coats to fill them. That's how thin the coats go on. Some of the deeper scratches that were still visible after three coats I hit with a spot of rattlecan primer, and then sanded it down. Since I was using white, and Rustoleum has white primer, this worked out well for me.
    Nice job with the green!

Jadebird - Thanks and no problem. This is the first car I have ever painted that I cared about wha tthe finish looked like. To that end it is also the first car that I have prepped for paint. So, even though I know you get what you put into prep, I was unsure exactly how good it would have to be BEFORE the paint went down. I assumed that the paint would fill alot more than it did.

I wish we would have spent more time prepping, oh well, maybe we'll paint it again.

I don't know if I can get it any shinier, remember I have a cheapie polisher.

Like I said we are very happy with the results right now, but it was so easy and fun that we could re-paint it this summer with little effort.

Rick - Good call and we should have primed the big flat areas, hood and trunk, and then gave them extra coats if needed.

I would definitely paint another car this way, not every car mind you, but alot of them.

I have a better digital camera that I can borrow from work to get better pics. I'll snag it tomorrow, also we need to reassemble the car so it will be nice to get pics in full daylight vs. fluorescent in the garage.

My son is ready for this :3gears:

Not bad. I might try that if I ever get the 'Lark going again.

Was that Hunter Green or Dark Hunter Green? Sorry, I'm color blind.... :Do No: Looks really good, can't wait to do the same!

I think he said it was the dark hunter green. I've noticed that the colors tend to be much lighter when on the car, probably due to the thinning. I actually am liking the color much better than I thought I would.
    Skylark350,
I know what you mean about the prep work. I've helped my dad out a little with some of his paint jobs (he knows how to do it the right way), and there is A BUNCH MORE work put into the prep phase of it. Spraying and wet sanding is where you see the results of all that work, which really sucks because I'm impatient!
It's amazing to watch my dad take his hand over a fender that I think is perfect, and have him find a couple low or high spots that I couldn't feel or see. I think it's a sixth sense or something.
Your paint really does look pretty good. I wonder if you let it sit for a few months out of the weather and then buff it up really good what it would look like?
Also, I'm pretty sure that once the paint has fully cured you could have it clear coated with a good automotive grade clear, and really make it sparkle. You might want to give it time to cure before waxing, by the way.

    Refrigerator

I used basically the same method on a refrigerator a while back to match the new appliances after we moved. Turned out great, way better and easier than a rattle can, especially indoors.
The key is that foam roller and a paint that is designed for the application with it. I bet with a little experience and patience you can get a decent job
for your driver quality car, especially with some colors that aren't so fault revealing.

It is Dark Hunter Green. Prep, Prep & more Prep.

Jadebird may be correct about the thinning making the paint lighter, it is definitely darker in the can.

We talked about hitting it with clear, we'll see what we do. For now he is set on FLAT black stripes over the hood and trunk, nothing on the sides. Kids.... :Dou:

The car should be reassembled this weekend so I'll take better pics outside. He really has done a good job of getting this car to a Good condition based on what we started with. If nothing else, it was/is a fun project for Dad & son to spend time on. Not trying to pull tears out of anyone, but it's been great.

AND it beats heck out of an import, like his friend with the Orange Celica with fake plastic hood scoop, brake coolers, body skirt and flames that are actually stickers!!!! Sheeeeeesh

    Time between coats?

Skylark350, how much time did you give the paint before you wet sanded between coats?

For most it was overnight drying, so probably 12-14 hours. Some coats got longer because of work, family stuff etc.

I did several like this: Paint around 9:30AM, Paint again around 7:00PM, sand the next morning and start again. Each coat took about an hour, the roof is getting vinyl so we did not have to paint that using this method.

There is no doubt we could do this better now that we have one under the belt. This car is my son's daily driver so he really wanted this done fast. If it was a project that he did not have to rely on daily, I am sure we would have spent more time prepping and the nd product would be better.

Don't get me wrong, it looks great and we are pleased. The small stuff is probably mnot going to get noticed by untrained eyes or the casual glance. A close inspection will reveal some flaws.

For $38, convenience of doing it in my garage, experience of trying to prep an entire car, it was well worth it and i would do it again. :TU:

Are you going to use rattle cans for the flat black strips?

  14. Skylark350

    Skylark350 Well-Known Member

Yes. Is there a reason we should not? We are going to put down pin stripes on the edges to cover the paint edge. At least that was the plan. Will this cause problems?????

Sorry about my lame photoshop skills. This is what he wants, haven't decided on pinstripe color yet. Silver???

    Suggestions welcome

Oh no! Not chevy stripes!
Only joking; it's your car, do what you want with it. But wouldn't GSX stripes be much better?
If you post a plain hood shot, I can do some photoshopping on it for you.

Was only curious... rattle can should be perfect for the strips. I will be using the same methods you used for my car in the summer. IMHO, black looks good.... :TU:

Jadebird - HAHA - I have tried to convince him!! No luck so Chevy stripes it is. We used the photo above to get an idea of several different stripes, in then end he chose above.

71skylark - Cool thanks. I was just making sure that the rattle can wasn't going to cause problems I was unaware of.

I will post up whole car pics after this weekend, fingers crossed. Hopefully the weather will be good enough to get it outside with brighter light.

I rattlecanned the stripes on the Corvair. The rolled paint would have just bled under the masking tape.
Pay attention to the instructions on the spraypaint can about time between coats. Seems that some brands have a "re-coat within 20 minutes, or wait 48 hours" rule. Supposed to avoid the dreaded wrinkles.
I laid down a thin base coat, then two more regular coats, all about 20 minutes apart, and called it done. I pulled the tape about a half an hour after the last coat. The paint was still tacky, so I was very careful.

That is unreal!!! Congrat's! I can't wait to see the outdoor pics showing the whole car! Did the paint can have anything about UV? Being boat paint I am sure it will hold up.
