Would anyone happen to know if a complete drive shaft from a 63 Olds F85 is same as 63 Buick Skylark?? Thanks!! John
Thanks Joe! Once again I'm reminded I need to get a Hollander's that covers the 60's into early 70's. John:beer
61-63 Special driveshaft interchange John, Depends on what tranny your going with. For automatics, Specials used an air cooled Dualpath with a bolt on yoke. The F85s featured a "slimjim" that was 10"- 12" longer. So there's really no chance for this to work. Sticks however can be made to work. The Buick 3spd. manual also had a bolt on yoke and with the bellhousing was a bit longer than the Dual path, so had a shorter d/shaft. The T-10 4spds. had a conventional slip yoke and had the longest combined lenght.Hence the shortest d/shaft. It also had its own cross member. But the main hang up on the interchanges is Buicks' use of the constant velocity joint in combination with a carrier bearing. Soooo the stick d/shafts -3spd.Buick to 3spd Olds are going to be the same overall lenghts, as will be the 4spd. to 4spd. Common sense tape measuring will verify carrier bearing location, and some relocation may be needed. But they'll fit. Bill V.
Bill, Thanks for the added info! The situation in question is with an automatic trans, and I was curious why the difference--the different transmissions explains it. A member of our local BCA chapter has problems with the cv joint in his 63 and the Olds swap had been proposed. He has since been offered a complete Buick driveshaft from a 61 or 62 which is available locally. John :beer
