I'm not the first to think of this -- I learned of it from spw1967 -- but I can verify that a 64-67 El Camino / Chevelle wagon fuel tank will fit 64-67 Sport Wagons (and presumably Vista Cruisers) with one slight modification: relocation of the filler neck from the top to the bottom half of the tank (so that it connects to the filler tube below the wagon's frame rails).

My replacement tank -- a Spectra GE37E -- shares the same profile as my original tank, including vent and sending unit location. I believe that this tank uses Spectra ST48 fuel tank straps (I could be wrong here).

Again, this isn't exactly earth-shattering news, but I figured it couldn't hurt to share it here.

Also, if you need an original (but rough) Sport Wagon or Vista Cruiser tank, I'm happy to give you my old one, for free (pickup only; I live 30 minutes west of Ann Arbor, MI).

Thanks for sharing that Greg :TU:

I will save the information, I remember that someone at the Station Wagon Forums was looking for a replacement petrol tank, a few years ago.

A quick update: I installed the new tank this weekend, along with a sending unit from a 1964 Chevelle/El Camino (1-bbl or 2-bbl; 5/16 outlet). I used the Spectra ST48 tank straps mentioned above, along with a fuel tank mat from v8buick member pglade. It's a tight fit -- I used 1/2" longer bolts -- but the setup is perfect. No leaks, and my gas gauge now works!

Congratulations! (Re: 64-67 Sport Wagon / Vista Cruiser Fuel Tanks: Solution)

Hi Greg and V-8 Buick longroof fans,

Glad to hear that you solved the problem of a replacement tank for your SportWagon! I'm sure there are a lot of guys who will take a new interest now that there is a gas tank solution for these wagons.

Best of luck with your own "trusty wagon!"

    Cheers, Edouard :beer
