Hey guys....new here with a recently aquired 65 skylark GS. I'm trying to be sure all the numbers check out. I've done some research and have found the engine code should be "LR" and have read those letters are stamped on the top surface of the block in front of the valley pan on the pass side....and should be upside down when looking from the front of the car. And on the driver side in the same location is the serial number. My questions are these:

    1) my LR code is present, but right side up when looking at it from the front...is that normal?
    2) my engine serial number appears to match the vin in the car, but one number is missing...?
    3) car is a protectoplate car and I have it. The engine code in the plate is LR 421, the engine block is LR 427 and reads right side up....yet the serial numbers match (other than the one missing digit) have these numbers been altered?
    Any info is appreciated.
    Thanks. -Keith

I've run across this many times. The engine code can be either forwards or backwards. Haven't seen an upside down one yet, but anything can happen at the factory. Someone must have mis-read the number I would almost certainly bet, especially when rushing or busy.
I say you have the proper docs to confirm it's NUMBERS MATCHING.

My '65 has the orig LR block but the VIN stamp is missing the last digit also. The orig owner confirmed the engine has never been out of the car. Like Tom said my understanding is that more that a few '65s have this stamping issue. My car was built in Fremont. 65GS.com has a lot of great info for new '65 owners too, you'll see a lot of familiar users from this board. Scott

Trying to find the vin on the motor that matches the door tag on my 66 skylark 300 v8, have looked behind both alternator and power steering unit, can't find any numbers. Any thoughts on where, could they have worn off or never been stamped ?

my first 65 GS had an engine code of LT...and the VIN matched the car..i bought it out of a junkyard where it sat for 15 years..and that was 1987...so..it was orig and correct..

Ive heard a few other very early cars getting LTs also..rare, but has happened
