Need some help before I return to the trans shop. Had trans rebuilt/resealed. When driving now the shifts seem good through all three speeds. When I accelerate the tranny seems to be in a lower gear and the engine races at 50 mph plus. If I accelerate/decelerate sometimes the tranny will change and the engine drops to a normal rpm. I can do adjustments and check connections myself if needed. Advice Please. I need to know more about it before returning to the shop. Thanks Joe
I would start by unplugging the 2 wire connector to the trans. If that makes it act like a plain 3 speed, the problem may be in the electrical control switches. Those can be checked out/adjusted. There is even a chance the 2 wires inside the trans got reversed. Bruce Roe
I had a similar issue and the problem was that I inverted the plug on my throttle switch after adjusting it. It can be plugged into the switch upside down if your not paying attention.
Bruce, Unplugged the round connector with a spades shaped as a "T "near the speedo cable. Test drove and found first to second and then third all fine. Still, seems it is running at a higher RPM? If I reverse the wires outside the trans for a test would it give me any worthwhile results? Nick, I haven't changed the connector because I never touched anything near the throttle. May do it though if I can't find anything else.
Sounds like it is in high stall. Pull both connections at the transmission and drive the car. 12 volts at the stator connection gets high stall, removing it should go to low stall, so without any connection at the transmission, it should stay in low stall.
It shifts OK with wires removed, so the 12V coming from the control switches must be confused. You will need to sort that out. Connecting 12V to the top lug of the T should put you into high stall, higher engine rpm but no shift. Connecting 12V to the lower lug should force a 3-2 downshift at medium rpm. However if high stall 12V has no effect, or the engine seems to be reving too much all the time, you could be in high stall all the time. This would be caused by a fault inside the trans, maybe a bad solenoid. Bruce Roe
