I can't find any of the specs for the rear differential of my '65 Skylark (2 door hardtop, 300 V8 4.9L, ST300 trans, stock everywhere else too). Can anybody give me the numbers on the size, ratio, etc.?

It's an 8.2 inch 10 bolt rear. Original ratio was in the 2.97-2.93-3.08 range.

etc... what do you want to know?
Wheel bearings are available for it. The GS and Sportwagon version had a slightly different housing with larger axle bearings.
New posi center sections are available too.

    Thanks wkillgs.

I want to replace my ST300 with a manual transmission. It'll help to know what my Skylark currently has before trying to figure out what I can or need to get.

From what I saw in the 65gs.com Service Manual, my differential is likely a 3.08, but since my '65 is just a Base model Skylark, I can't swear to that number yet.

If your going with the factory look, then you would want the M20,with the lower 1st gear. If you are thinking of something aftermarket, like a 5-spd,there are a variety of options, and you can order them with different 1st gear ratios,custom-taylor it to your car.

All the 65 300/st300 cars I've had came with a 2.78 rear (and I've had many). You will probably want a Saginaw with a 3.11 first gear for that rear. Saginaw's also come with a 3.50 first gear, I have a 3.50 in my shop for $200 if you're interested, $400 if you want it rebuilt. A Muncie with a 2.56 first gear not give you enough first gear and will be hard on your clutch.

DAVE, If you are trying to match up ratio with trans etc. YOU really need to open that rear up and look on the edge of the ring gear...The ratio tooth count will be stamped on the edge ...keep spinning and wiping yu will find it.
    2.78 will be 14 - 39 tooth count
    3.08 will be 13- 40 tooth count
    2.93 will be 14 - 41 tooth count

and so on... Do NOT assume any Muscle car era rear is original to the car...after 50 years they usually NEVER are.
