I was just wondering if the hoods on the 1966 Skylarks and Gran Sports were fundamentally different. I know that the Skylark hood has the spear/ornament, and the Gran Sport hood has the fakie scoops, but beyond that is there any difference in the shape/styling of the hood? :Do No: Pictures would be swell. :)

Except for the holes for the moldings, they are the same.
Skylark has the spear down the center.
Hood from a Special does not have the center spear (and no molding holes!) so that is your best bet for a GS hood clone. Hard part is finding nice GS hood chrome.

Walt is right about the spear holes, but making a GS hood out of special hood is going to be a lot of work. Not only are there cutouts in the top surface of the hood, there are cutouts underneath so you can access the studs for the grills. Ruining a good hood seems very possible when trying to make the needed cuts. That only goes for the layman, not the pro with the right tools.

it has 2 holes for the scoops that would have to be cut and then small holes for the scoops studs which would be easily done with a drill

i have both a skylark and a gs hood at my home you could fill the spear holes and cut those out pretty simple with a cutting tool and drill

the problem is finding scoops there like finding gold

i was going to have a set cut by one cnc machines but actually found a gs hood it wasnt cheap either

would be neat to see some done from billett alumiun

FYI I did a 67 special hood and it is not quite as involved but for the larger holes in the under structure of the hood I first drilled the hole from above for the studs then put a piece of metal between the under stucture and the skin and used a hole saw of correct size to cut the under structure hole without cutting the skin. It worked for me. I made a templete of the GS hood and overlayed it on the special one to get the correct position of the scoop mounting holes. If I was to do a 66 I would use a saber saw to cut the two larger slits for the scoops.

I also have and extra set of good condition 66 scoops complete with mounting plates. No broken studes and only minor pitting one one. I am asking $250.00 plus shipping, price is firm. Thanks Bill.

I have a free-be skylark hood if someone would like to practice cutting. Everyone on this post is a long way from MI. though.
