Jimmy scours the whole PLANET for 66 GS's! Somehow he knows where most of them are. Think he even found one (at least one) in France! A man on a mission for sure!

Jim, was that on New Jerseys Craiglist last week? I was going to contact the guy, but the ad disappeared by the time I got home from work.
It was a project, so I figured it wasn't on your 'gotta have' list.

Holy Crap...16 of the same car? Isn't that like women and their shoes?

Are '66 GS boxed frames so hard to find that I should get one where I can and not limit myself?

If Chris Babinski sold his car to Phil Zmuda in NJ, then that's my car. Phil said he bought the car off of ebay from a guy in CA. I'd love to trace the car back to the CA guy and learn the history of the car.

That's about what she looked like when I got her, but the little bit of shine you see in the photo quickly faded.

So, you know part of my car's story. Did you pass on buying her or did Phil outbid you? How much did Phil spend? Do you have contact info for Chris? Is Chris a board member?

I figured Jimmy knew how many there were 'cause he owned the rest of them, and went outside his building for a head count, haha. Unfortunately, I don't think you can break them down any deeper than the color? My shadow turquoise/black/black 4 speed convertible is a Baltimore car. How many were there, Zoltar, I mean Jimmy?
By the way, when you begin to play the "how many were there" game, like the Mopar and Ford guys are able to do, you very quickly find that for these special cars, there are many one of one cars, based on options, such as wheels vs. hubcaps, etc.
As an aside, I would bet cash money that Jimmy owns more '66's than I have seen in person, in my years of cruising, street racing, and car shows. He even has one of the promo jackets that the salesmen were given to promote the cars in the dealerships. Walt or Jimmy can send you a pic. They occasionally pop up on ebay.

So what gave you the bug to start collecting '66 Skylarks? I got bitten while looking for my first car at a warehouse in Springfield, IL, at the tender age of 15. It's undergoing a frame-off in Mansfield, TX, as we speak. Dan

Yes, do tell! We like stories.

I got my first 66 from a friends older brother, Butch. He bought it from a hot rod guy in the neighborhood.... Nailhead Buick engines in all his Hot Rods!
Anyway, Butch was fixing up the 66 GS and making it a nice cruiser....Cragear wheels, air shocks, all the 70's hop-up stuff. He took the car to MAACO for a repaint in medium blue with white SS stripes. Went to pick the car up and he didn't see it there but did see a gold 66 GS. Turns out MAACO painted the car the wrong color! He hated it. When the engine seized up, the car sat in his driveway for a year until I took it off his hands for $50. I was just under 16 at the time.:bglasses:

I got my 66 off the factory floor Dec. 65. Never sat on a dealer lot or had a sticker.

    Chuck, that's pretty cool.

Dan K, the old car 'bug' probably dates back to when I was 6 or 7 when my parents had a 70ish Pontiac Nova look-a-like. At 14, I fell in love with 65-67 Ford Mustangs. At 15, a boyfriend had a 64 Gold Impala that had been in mags and won shows. At 17, another boyfriend fixed up cars and had a 67 White Mustang that I would have bought if my folks had helped me out. I fell in love with convertibles when another boyfriend/now ex husband picked me up for a date in convertible Blue w/white race stripes Chevelle. I couldn't stop looking at the stars on that warm summer night. Then my ex traded his low-rider in for a '72 Monty Carlo. I loved that car until he mistakenly diagnosed her with a fatal tranny problem. I named her Ramona. He took her off the rode, took all of the interior out, started stripping the paint, bored out the motor, and then lost momentum. We divorced and I don't know what he did to Ramona, but she's not in his garage anymore.

Walt K, you guys already know most of the story about my FAST/UGLY girl, so let's finish it first. Apparently, Jimmy knows a fair amount of her 'pre-me' story. In October 2007, I drove up to NJ with a hauler and cash in hand. Phill said he was a cop, so I got to test drive her way above the speed limit. I pushed the petal down and she quickly claimed to 90mph and still had more to go when I got off the pedal. I looked the car over...too quickly. I saw the rusty area on the frame right under the driver's side door, but didn't really know what I was seeing. I let the excitement overrule my gut. When I got her home I found all the other rusty places under the car. I think Phil got her that way too.

The whole frame was rotted, so I put her out to pasture while I figured out what to do. The inside is original, and I already had a 66 boxed frame under SHINY/FRANKENSTIEN. The local resto guys either ddn't want anything to do with it, had too much business to take her on, didn't call back, didn't want to take one nice car apart for the frame, etc. So she sat in the yard, while the other stayed in the gargage. I lucked into a resto guy recently, and thus the reason for posting this thread.

As for SHINY/FRANKENSTIEN, I was cruising around on my motorcycle one day, and this shiny red car with a For Sale sign caught my eye. I waited for the car to pass, and followed him all the way to his house. I test drove it accross the Glouchester bridge to my mechanic father-in-law. He gave the blessing. I knew she was road worthy after driving a couple of hours on a hot summer day, not to mention having to sit in traffic waiting for a bridge lift. I came back the next day with cash in hand. She only needs minor cosmetic things like carpet, chrome, etc.

I didn't pay that price. This car was supposed to be it. When I was tuning up the engine, I got tired of going to the store saying it's a 66, but the engine is a '72. That lead to the purchase of FAST/UGLY. But, then I decided to keep her and invested in improving the suspension. But, then luck came along and now I'm fixing up the GS. I'm only driving her around now until I have a pretty GS, and then she'll be For Sale...not enough room in the gargage.

That's the story. So what do you guys know about my cars?

Yes, I'd like to see the pics. I can show to my resto guy, I can get him to document the frame that was on the GS.

Denise, I posted a thread over at www65gs.com:
    http://65gs.com/board/index.php/topic,376.0.html

Jim....take a look at the front crossmember reinforcements....are they on all your cars?

I post a lot over on 65GS to archive the early GS info. The 65-66 GS's have the same mechanicals and both have the heart of a Nailhead!

Chris (the site owner) thinks I'm secretly getting all my 66 buddies to join there to eventually do a hostile takeover and rename the site www.66GS.com!!:Brow: :bglasses:

    BTW, Dan....join us there too!:beers2:
