Does anyone have any idea what the center console in a 1969 GS is played with?

I have a spare that was pitted pretty bad. Sanded it down to just beneath the copper coating and was going to try to replate it. But I think chrome is far too bright.

Was wondering if it was a nickel or zink plating.

70 to 74 were chrome plated 68 and 69 are a different animal . The outside edges and a few raised areas are shiny chrome the rest is closer to a satin finish or a brushed stainless look. I have not been able to find someone to duplicate it. I will be watching to see if any one else chimes in.

I sent one set in to chrome. It bubbled like crazy and was way too shiny. Nothing close to the original.

That’s the one I sanded down to the original material. Was thinking about trying to electroplate it with either zink or nickle.

One of the members went to a sign shop
And they made an argent over lay and looked really nice ...

To echo what DL stated above.. One of the esteemed board members went to his local sign shop and found an adhesive backed vinyl that was almost a perfect match for the argent colored area. It was then cut to fit into those areas. VERY cost effective and looked great!

    per Mark:

"Yep, I added the tach to the console. Fun little project, that turned out well. IMHO the center console also got the center section refinished with a 3M silver grey decal that matched the paint in the chromed area. It was too badly pitted to repaint and look right, so the guy that does sign work for the company applied the vinyl".

This one I sanded down to the bare metal, below the copper plating. We did a chrome powder coat. It didn’t turn out too bad other than the orange peel because my powder coat guy isn’t the best at applying spray.

Will definitely look into the vinyl. That looks amazing!

And no more kitchen cupboard latch on the console storage compartment. I created a smooth as silk magnet lock and ...it's super quiet. Somewhere on here I created a thread about 2 or 3 years ago on how to do that modification. I think under a word search of maybe "69 Console"... I did the sign company thing with them using the 3M material custom cutting the pieces for me...seems like it was somewhere between $50.00 and $75.00 done with their computer slicer/dicer machine.

Thanks for the idea guys! I’ve been going nuts trying to find a suitable solution to these pitted things!
