Duane if you go to Napa and tell them gates 20980 that's what I think it is. The non gates part# on mine is faded but I'll post a pic.
I think I got this from napa but not sure. It definitely is correct I just maybe had to trim slightly at the radiator.
Thanks Ken for the number. I have a Gates 20980 Upper, and yes you have to cut them at the Rad. The one I have is used with a little sliver out of the top. I will keep it as a spare. Duane
I bet so . I buy at O’Reillys but it’s just a gates hose . My ‘68 is an Early build so no hose hook provision .
Yeah I have one of them too and its in nice shape. I'm going to take all the hoses I have and see which one fits the best. The nice thing is I don't have to go around the GS air cleaner so it gives me options. I am using the Air Cleaner pictured below. I talked to David Walker last night and he says he has the Belts and Hoses I need, so I should be covered now. Guys, thanks for all the help. Duane
Ahhh...the "fly eye" air cleaner we used to run in the 60's. They are very cool looking, but a nightmare if the carb backfires because the foam ignites. Get that puppy dialed in with something else or nothing before you use it.
You know, I was just thinking....is this thing a 3 spd or 4 spd?? Too lazy to read the preceding 17 pages.
Frank, Nick was talking about running it to see the numbers. I imagine he will be dialing it in. I hear you, and am planning to carry a fire extinguisher in the car at all times. The car is a 4-speed. Duane
I have gates 20980 on my GS 400 -69. That is the correct hose that fits in the hook and goes around the air cleaner if that is needed.
Duane, Can you scan or take a nice, clear photo of those Mr. Gasket instructions for the fly eye air cleaner. I have one that I picked up at a swap meet and would like to have the instructions. Thanks, Mike P.S. Mine is used but complete and the guy sold it to me for $25.00! Sure beats the prices I have seen on ebay.
It was the hot air cleaner back in the day. They were used on Motion, Nickey, Dana, Yenkos...it was like a must have. I remember getting one at Baldwin Motion in NYC while picking up an L88 glass hood for my Nova SS. But the elements were very flammable, then they would melt into the carb if they caught on fire. They are hard to find now, expensive, and while there are used ones out there they rarely or never have the element. Might be worth it to source the material in your spare time (lol) in case you ever need one. You know....like just keep your eyes open walking around Home Depot or whatever.
Dirt bike shops should have flat sheets of air cleaner foam that you can use to make filters for fly eye air cleaners. I used to buy it to make foam filters for my vintage dirt bikes.
I can't believe with all the "day 2" restorations, and nostalgia drag race events, etc., that someone hasn't started reproducing the "fly eye" air breathers?? That, and if one were to reproduce Keystone Kustomags, they could sell a bunch of them. Kustomags not to be confused with those butt ugly Klassics, not the same AT ALL!!!
Yeah, Kustomags, they are the BEST as far as I'm concerned. Have them on my Riv. since '73. Still look good. No steel that causes rust. Forged aluminum, light weight, IMPROVES handling & ride quality. Tom T.
