Finally got the wifes 1 family owned 69 Skylark on the road and I am very impressed how much more responsive the Skylark is then my old 70 Electra. Its very responsive with that 350 2 barrel, but noticed the rear does 1 wheel wonders to often. It needs a posi. What years and models have the same rear as the 69 Skylark? (im new to mid body Buicks always had full size)
As far as a posi carrier and gears, the 68-70 Buick 8.2 are the only ones you can get parts from. Aftermarket support for that rear is very low. It will cost more to build that rear, and the only new gears available were made by Fabcraft. Not sure if they still have them or not, but they made 3.42 and 3.64 gear sets at one point, and they may have a posi carrier, not sure. If you want to transplant the entire rear, any GM A body rear 64-72 will bolt in with minor differences in drive shaft length and attachment. Your best bet would be to look for an 8.5 10 bolt out of a 71-2 Skylark or Cutlass. Lots of parts for that rear available.
Yes, get an 8.5 or Chevy or Pontiac 8.2 for part availability. 8.5 will require about an inch shorter driveshaft
You can also look for the 64-67 8.2 BOP rear. That is NOT the same as the 68-70 Buick ONLY 8.2. The 64-67 8.2 is bolt in axle with plenty of parts availability.
If I was you, I would make sure you have the original rear in the car. That 69 is now over 50 years old. Lots of things get changed out on a 50 year old car. Unless you have owned it from new, the rear may have been changed. We checked with Fabcraft about a month ago. They were non-committal regarding making another run of the 68-70 Buick only 8.2s.
In case he wants to go with the 71-72 rear,I have one,it was just rebuilt with Auburn carrier .new 373 gears and good axel's.Everything is new.$1100.00 ply shipping or pick it up.I( might be able to bring it to Bowling Green or maybe Cecil.Bruno.
If you decide to keep the 69 8.2, Jim (Monzaz) at JDRace helped me out. I bought the parts from him and got some local help to rebuild.
