Looking for a nice original or restored radio for my 70 convertible frame off car .....am-fm stereo with rear speaker fader.

    Thanks!

I believe that with am/fm stereo, that there were two speakers in the dash & two speakers in the rear. the "fader" would already be part of the radio controls.

According to the original owner of my late 70 build date, 71GS, they didn't offer a stereo am/fm unless you got the 8 track player along with radio. Just what buyer told me.....:Do No:

Was there a "stereo" AM-FM ever available for the "A" body cars before 1972? I believe in late '72 a true stereo radio (with a stereo light) was first made available for "A" body Buicks. A separate stereo unit could be ordered for the AM-FM radios in the big cars back to at least 1967 but not the Skylark body styles.

I have a factory AM-FM in my '68 and and I don't think its stereo, the only reason I have two speakers is because it came with a factory 8-track player that was stereo. A rear seat speaker was an option that could be ordered with an AM or FM radio. I think the fader control was added with the rear seat speaker option.

The '70 GS order form only lists an AM-FM radio option, D5. Rear speaker was a separate option, though it was combined with D5 as options G(AM-FM Radio and Rear Speaker) and T(AM-FM Radio, Rear Speaker, and Stereo Tape Player).

I'm probably not describing it correctly ......this convertible has am fm and a rear speaker from the factory. I'm guessing it isn't "stereophonic "???

Correct. For the OP, it would have a speaker in the dash & a speaker behind the rear seat with a fader, but not stereo.

D5 speaker is installed on the passenger side for the single rear speaker, correct?

I owned, from new (ordered), a 1970 Malibu with just am radio, and dual rear speakers with padded speaker boxes.

Is this correct? No one answered this and I would like to know also? Does the rear seat speaker get mounted behind the passenger seat?
    Thanks

Correct. Pics from my '71 - I don't believe it's ever been removed (not my handiwork on the trunk floor - prev. owner/bodyshop made a mess)

Thanks Dano. Is yours a convertible? I see the steering wheel in the pic.

Dano's car is definitely a 'vert, that's where mine is mounted. That speaker's definitely been out. The 2 fasteners on the left are correct, the other 2 should look like that. Four small, chrome screws go into that fastener to hold the grill on. There should be a ground wire that goes from one of the fasteners to the seat back, to ground the one terminal speaker. Be very aware the correct fasteners, screws, and special grill must be used to avoid breakage of the rear window when lowered. Funny, because I just found one of those fasteners on my floor in a corner of my garage yesterday. I might have more kicking around here.

If you have enough to sell, I would be interested. My car is a HT and came with the rear speaker option (AM only radio). It has the mesh package tray so my understanding after reading various threads, is that I DO NOT need a grille.
How are the screws going through for the speaker without breaking the integrity of the mesh package tray from the topside?
    Can you post a pic?
Also, the rear speaker wire runs along the passenger side under the door sill and along and through the rear seat seatback correct?

Mike, I thought your car was a 'vert. Those fasteners won't help you if it's not a 'vert. You can mostly disregard everything I wrote. Usually, if a car came from the factory with a rear speaker or speakers, it came with a mesh tray, no grill needed. If dealer installed and the car didn't have a mesh tray, a grille was used. there were special fasteners for the mesh tray speakers. These fasteners have like a clip on them that fits in the keyhole shaped holes to make putting in the speakers really easy and invisible. I'll see if I have a pic.
