Well I have been through hell trying to find an axle that will fit my center section. Splines are the right count, but the axles I've tried won't mesh right with the posi. I'm still not 100% positive it is a buick axle, but this is the closest I have come to an answer. It has no codes stamped on it, just a N116 on the drivers side. Here's the run down. If you think it's not a '70 buick GS please let me know.

    10 bolt 8.2
    3.42 gears (stamped GMC)
    28 spline axles
    Outer axle seal
3 access holes (on good axle)
    4 pinion cone type posi
retainer plate has slots next to each bolt hole

If this is indeed a 70 gs axle, Hollander lists it as being a one-year only thing.

If you have one please let me know how much and location.

    I'm in dallas.

    Thanks,
    George

Sorry it has taken so long to reply. I got real busy working on another project. I still need the axle. It's an odd coincidence that 116 is the hollander code and my axle has N116 on it in an odd place. Maybe it really is a '70 GS. I still had doubts.

Doc., You said you were planning on keeping the rear end complete. Would you rather keep it all together now that americanmuscle has offered his or are you still willing to sell one axle?

I need to get the length to make sure. Yes I have one good one. Someone replaced on with the wrong style and it has no provision for an outer seal. He stuck an inner seal in the housing and it got chewed to death by the bearing. Not to mention the 1/2 inch of play side-to-side. I'll get back to you asap on the length.

  5. axle identification?

George, the axles i took out of my 70 were not sealed type bearings .they are tapered roller bearings and that is what timken bearing book shows 64-70. in 71 they started using sealed roller bearings like you show in your pics when they started the 8.5 the earlier axles were 8.2...... does your housing have an A casted into the center of the housing on the front side? I have both types of axles wichever you need . is one of your bearings on the carrier larger than the other on the LH side? I just went thru this crap. i always thought there was only one 10bolt and they were all the same.WRONG. if you need them i got em.(i think) thanks todd:boring:

It's a mess Todd. THe "good" side has an outer seal AND a sealed bearing which makes no sense to me, but it is the side that fits. I'll have to go look for the casting marks. is the "A" on the top of the housing? Not sure if the bearings are different size. I might not be able to check that for a while since I need the car movable right now.

  7. thats OK.I just want you to get the right axle the first time.YES the A casting is on the front top side.the letter is about 3in in size. thanks todd:beer

Have a pair of 28 spline A-9 axle bearing axles that will not propperly mesh & fit a '71-72 8.5 A-body. These 3 hole axle flange axles have been in one of the racks for a long time, as I did not paint pen ID them when I pulled them....as destiny would have it, they have now been ID'ed as '70 Skylark axles :)
