Project cars generally bring more than they rightfully should. I ran across a 1970 Cutlass convertible the other day that was trading hands for 2k. The car was so rough, it should have been the seller handing the buyer money!

Let me start off by saying I am NOT a "project car" guy by any stretch of the imagination. But, some friends and I have done some number crunching, and if you can do some work yourself, this isn't a bad car if you want a 4 speed stage 1. There have been several for sale in the $65k - $90k range lately, and yes, some have sold in that range.

$20k - $25k paint body suspension firewall front frame , and black out frame/floorpans . Trim and reassembly . Very reputable shop that does excellent work on Buick's.
Mechanicals would be probably be about $10k - $12k (my guess, not fact). Can be done cheaper.
Interior and top plus all the parts would be about $5k (on the high side, but should also include chrome dash bezel, etc).
    Tires and wheels - $2k
    Chrome/stainless/misc overages etc. - $4k

    So what is that $40 - $50k?

I don't know what the price of the car is, but if Scott's Miller's was $18k (and Scott's was bought by a board member who DEFINITELY knows what it was worth) If the car was bought in the $15k - $20k range, it seems one could make the numbers work with some elbow grease if this was the car they wanted. As I recall, a 69 Stage 1 4 speed hardtop project recently sold in that price range, and it was a STEP CHILD!

    Just saying......

I can post a picture of the hip line moulding on my car when I get back to the states!!! It's 130* right now in Kuwait. Was there any rhyme or reason for that trim piece? My 350-2 Skylark is a basic car, but had hidden wipers, the map light, a dome light instead of lights in the sail panels and little else, and a white vinyl top. I don't have the trim that runs along the lip of the trunklid or quarter extensions, but I do have the belt line rubber. Maybe it's part of a trim package??

You may want to sharpen up on those Spidey skills...I assure you there's no hokey bidding going on. ;)

I don't know if it might explain some things..like the seat covers or pedal pads...but the owner owned an old Olds dealership. The picture of the "barn" the car was stored in was actually the old paint shop.

There was another GS there, a 66 4-speed car. It wasn't so lucky...it has been stored outside...

Chris, I have seen your posts on here for years. Your way to smart to be a "project car" guy.

The earlier point was that a beautiful, matching numbers, well documented '70 Stage 1 was recently bid up to less than 40k. The project car doesn't make sense at that point, unless the 4 spd is now at a 50% premium over the TH400. You watch the market closer than any of us, so you know what I mean. This was Jim Lore's point earlier on the thread and the same reason I couldn't actually bring myself to bid on this car. I'm not trying to play both sides of this coin, I'm just sayin' is all.

What is the proper premium for a 4 speed, if there is such a thing?

Do you have a link to share regarding the step child car? :3gears:

    Jacquie,

Thanks for sharing the cool '66 field find pictures. You've probably got someone drooling over those now and wanting that beast.

Can I ask you guys why you're selling the Burgundy car?

Exactly --There is no doubt that it is a neat car. It would be great to to see it restored and back out on the road. But, financially speaking, you want to be the person who buys it from the person who buys it at this auction and restores it.

He didn't buy the 66, it's still sitting there. It was very rusty.

Brian, we don't restore them....don't have the desire, knowledge or equipment to do it. The only reason he bought the Burgundy car was because he thought it was a cool and rare car that was worth saving and maybe by dragging it home he could make a few bucks on it. I guess some people think that is wrong, that if you buy something for a dollar you should sell it for a dollar and let the next guy make the money on it. Not sure I understand that mentality.

Regarding the statement made that something fishy may be going on with the bidding... I'll repeat that we do not have anyone bidding this car up. He has another car on eBay, an El Camino, and I see that at this time the same person has high bid on both the Buick and the Elky. I agree that is very odd and does give the impression somethings not on the up and up, so I can understand why someone would think such. From looking at his feedback, he seems to be a Buick guy, so I'm not sure if it is someone serious or someone playing games. :Do No:

The project car makes sense for someone who wants one of these and can't afford a done car.

    JJ455's - $69k asking price
Jeff Horsman - $87,500 asking price
Silver 4 speed earlier this year (last year?) listed at $75k sold very quickly)
Scott Miller's project ($18k per Jason Cook)
Mike Berkmeier 69 Stage 1 project is the one I was referring to.

Again, I am not a project guy, but if someone wanted one of these and could do some of work themselves, it would be a good car for them. If they are like me, and would have to pay someone to do everything, then it would NOT be a good car for them, they should buy one done.

    Jacquie,

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but do you know if Glen checked the numbers on the Muncie trans to see if it matches, and if it has the 8.2 3.42 posi still in it?

BTW - Don't sweat the negative comments in this section. The ebay cars are always picked apart by the KRS (Keyboard Restoration Specialists). Glen should be commended for the ad, not ripped. The pictures he took are very clear and show a very accurate condition of the car. :TU:

Two other 4 speed Stage1's on the Buick Horsepower site. One listed at $95,000, the other listed at $110,000. Also BBS old 4 speed stage1 That Sefano has listed for $65,000. Are there any others?

James, he did check for numbers. He could not find any stamped numbers on the tranny. He even tried to clean the top of the trans the best he could and got a mirror trying to see if there was anything stamped on top of the case, but could not find anything. On the rear end, he looked for numbers stamped on the axle and all he could see were the numbers 3 4 2. Also, on the block, we posted the casting numbers we found in the ad, but there were no numbers at all on the pad where the vin normally is. And I must have taken 50 pictures of the other pad where the "SS" should be trying to see what was there and could not see anything definitive there either. It almost looked like I could see one S, but it was so faint that we did not want to mention it in the ad because we can't determine whether that's truly what it is or not.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but to post the picutres in the actual ad do you just copy the photobucket image code?

I thought maybe he stole your crayon. , sorry Brian .

On the 72 block you know the Vin# is behind the power steering, not where the '70 is located. You may or may not be able to read it without removing the pump.
