71 A/C schematics +/or flow chart?

I have some minor problems with the fan speed controls interacting with my A/C compressor on my '71 Skylark convertible.

    A. I have no low fan speed whether I choose heat or A/C

    B. My A/C compressor shuts off if I select Max. fan speed

A schematic and a flow chart would get me well along my way to figuring out what is amiss here. Does anyone have these items?

    Thanks!

I don't have any info on a 1971, but hopefully these diagrams from 1970 Skylark should be what you are looking for. I know 1972 switched to a superheat switch design. Wayne

    Lee,
Pick up a Chassis manual for '71. An entire chapter on the manual AC system.
Constant speed will indicate a bad fan speed resistor or two of the resistor coils touching.
Diagnosis section describes, step by step, what changes should take place as you move the control levers thru the various positions.
My job in the Spring is to sort it all out on my own car as I currently have no control to direct the air from floor-dash-defrost etc..

    Wayne,
Thanks for the schematic diagrams, they are just what I need.

    Steve,
Is the chassis manual the same as the AIM? The troubleshooting flow chart that you describe should be very helpful.

    Thanks,

    Lee

    Lee,
Believe the Chassis Manual with drawings & instructions would be best. The AIM will show you pics of components & how they should be factory installed.

    (Check the resistor array)

(Check the high speed relay on the firewall)

Mmmm, I'm pretty rusty on this, but I used to be pretty good on the AC. There is a fusible link on the fender skirt that blows when the refrigerant is too low. This also makes the fan operate funny. Trace the wires back from the compressor, and you'll find it. You can pick them up pretty much anywhere. If your refrigerant is low, don't install the fusible link until the system is recharged, you'll just end up buying another one. Make a jumper from a short piece of wire and two male spade clips and use it while charging the system. Like I say, I'm rusty on this, so check the fusible link first, before you do any of the above.

    Hi Jim,

I have had the resistor array out and checked and cleaned it and reinstalled it. I have also replaced the relay on the firewall. I need to get in there with a V.O.M. and start probing for the problem(s). I suspect a bad ground or broken/disconnected wire somewhere.

Thanks for the lead on this, I will see what I can find.
