Need to have my top replaced on my 71 Skylark along with its headliner. Been told by most that I need to get the top as well as the headliner on my own and that the labor cost would be around $700. Is this a good price? In addition does the top replacement require the removal of the windshield or just the trim? That said where would I get replacement clips for the trim when and if they brake? I was thinking of taking the trim and top off myself to save money but don't want to damage the trim!!

When mine was replaced the glass was out, but it can be done if the glass is in. You could probably save yourself some time and money if you get the top and headliner yourself.
$700. sounds about right for the labour if that's for the roof and headliner. I paid $350. for just the roof.
Replacement clips are avalible at most body shops. Just take your time removing the trim....should be ok.

check out the MR. G's website. They have all the correct type replacement clips and site shows good pictures. Also be very careful with the rain gutter trim. It is easily bent putting it back on.

I just purchased vinyl top trim clips from Parts Place in Chicagoland @40c ea but now I'm thinking I need more than the 12 I bought & they have a $20 min. order. They're nylon & the originals may have been metal, I'm not sure. I didn't know about "Mr. G" ?

The windshield & rear window trim only needs to come off.

I have the original st/st trim which cleaned up like new with fine steel wool.

I bought the premium vinyl top material from year one with "tail piece". Haven't taken out of box but "Year One" usually has good stuff & never resists returns with original packaging for full credit.

    Good luck with your project!
