Darn, I wish I hadn't seen that. Now I'm going to want to do that to a `65 Sportwagon that I want to build someday.

Wow very nioce work, now if it was me, I would have put the 71' Buick Riviera front clip on it. I have always wanted to put a Riv front end on a wagon.

Hey Yardley, the body is basically done, and I'm now cleaning the engine compartment and undercarriage of 30+ years of grease and grime.
I will try to take some pics tomorrow.

Removed the headliner last week so that I could see about coating the roof panel with the sound deadener,
only to find that the roof is of double-walled construction!
    Who knew?! :Dou:
    That complicates things a little.

Still not sure if I am going to coat the floor, roof and inner panels with QuietCar sound deadener. I do want this car to be as quiet and solid feeling as possible...just not sure if this has a rough texture or smooth.

Has anyone used this product? http://www.quietcoat.com/index.html

I may just purchase a small amount, and try it out to see if I like it. :TU:

If you will NEVER need to access (wiring, etc.) the inner space between the double walls ... expanding foam works well and fills this void. There is a particular order or process, though, that will save time and prevent a mess ... I have done this to two older trucks and a $3.50 can of expanding foam insulation works extremely well.

    Thanks Ken!
Thanks Hawken! I may give that idea a try.

Been cleaning 38 years of grease and grime off of my engine and undercarriage...dang this thing was dirty!
Before I ever stripped the paint off, I Gunked the engine and used a pressure washer on it, but it didn't get very clean.
So I tried some engine degreaser from a good color store I like, and it works dang good! :TU: Lousy pics...

Everything has undercoating on it. It was probably done at the dealer when new...not sure if the factory undercoated these. :Do No:
Anyway, it is tenacious stuff! Not sure how far I am going to go to remove it...it is everywhere! :Dou:

The single exhaust took a hit on something, and it pushed right up next to the oil pan, and it cracked where it all comes together. I will put duals on it.

This is an amazingly rust-free wagon. I am still in awe of how nice California cars can be...I was so lucky to find this one.

I bet these are the original rear shocks! They have the exact kind of undercoating overspray on them that the rest of the wagon does! :pp

Cleaning the differential, and saw this little tag. Hmmm.

Well this is fun...USE LIMITED SLIP DIFF LUBE ONLY

Well, as you can see, I still have a lot of work to do. But at least it is all cleaner, and I can see what needs to be done.
I will continue on trying to remove the undercoating, but not sure how that will go. Any ideas? :Do No:
I may just repaint and reundercoat all of this and call it a day.

    Still having fun!
    David :)

Tell you what... if you aren't planning on a 400 point-style build, I'd just repaint everything and bolt it all back together.

Remove and paint what is easy to do - like sway bar, alt and ac brackets, ps pump and bracket, etc. Then mask off or wrap in aluminum foil and squirt it.

I had little time to get anal, and had to work bent over the fenders. It came out pretty nice. I can see yours looking pretty much new. And if you use a lift and get under it you can even get anal with the underneath parts.

    Thanks Yardley.

I started out just wanting to clean off the old grease and grime. Went a little nuts with trying to get everything as clean as possible.
The undercoating is still on the entire underside, as it should be, but the front inner wheel wells and frame rails will be in the correct semi-flat paint.
I'm going to go back with fresh paint on everything. Ordered the correct Buick Red last week.

Your helpful tips on how to get good results are appreciated. I went through your thread and sure liked how your engine compartment came out.

We'll see how it turns out.

I'm envious of how your frame rails came clean.

Today, I got some paint on my engine. I sure like how it turned out.

above: is this part supposed to be red, black, or unpainted?

Now, I just have to paint the inner fender housings, touch up a few things and assemble everything. If I didn't have my parts car sitting a few feet away, with every hose and fitting in place, I would be confused  .
