Should I have a vented or non on my car? My cap is old and the rubber seal in it is not real soft at all.

If you're not running a charcoal canister the tank has to be vented somewhere.

I have a charcoal canister up in the front drivers side of car. It has one line to the snorkel (assuming that is orig setup) and one line that goes to the fuel pump. Nothing running back to the tank.

'72 should be non-vented. Venting is via the vent unit behind the rear seat back. two metal tubes from the front of the tank are connected to the rear seat vent by hoses.

So I should be able to see this vent unit behind the back of the back seat if I move my conv top stuff hanging in the trunk (can't see back of seat with it in the way). I should be able to see this unit from inside the trunk?

so there is no vent unit behind my seat connected to the gas tank then since my cap does the venting?

No, that unit is behind your rear seat. The correct cap has a vacuum/pressure relief valve, so in that sense, it is vented.

So the car should have a cented cap and the vent unit behind my back seat? Since my car in a conv the thing the top sits in blocks the view of that area of which till now I had no reason to take a look at.

I wouldn't worry about it, it has no bearing on how the car runs. Unless you are smelling gas fumes, leave it alone. BTW, you should be able to see it from underneath.

I looked in the trunk, moving the storage bag/liner the hangs down where the top goes and all i saw was the TOP motor, a speaker (surprised, no way you could hear it with the top liner in the way). I saw nothing else there unless the vent tank/unit is real small and so low I could not see it.

I did look under the car but could not get under it enough to really see the upper top of tank, needs to be on a lift or jacked up.

Can't see it from the trunk. You need to get under the car.

I was told here that the vent can I guess you can call it was located behind the back of the back seat.

That's correct, but it is on the other side of the floor, you know, where the fuel lines are.:). They wouldn't put that in the passenger compartment.

I got under it a little tonight, flashlight in hand I was able to see the 3 (I think it was 3) going into the vent unit. The lines looked good. No cracking or coming apart. Next time I have it on a lift I will look closer. I really don't have fume smells so I feel good all is in good shape.

did not federal law mandate that '71 & onward must have non-vented gas tank fuel caps?
