I just received my replacement carpet to redo my 72 Buick Skylark, 2-door, auto, no console. I am replacing the floor and the door panels. I have instructions for the floor but do not have them for the door panels. This is my first time doing so, so I am trying to get all the info before I start. First thing I noticed without taking the whole door paneling off, the door panel carpet looks like it was sewn into the cardboard panel underneath. Whats the correct way to take the old carpet off the existing door panel? It seems I would have to take a knife and carefully cut this old stuff off the cardboard paneling, which also seems to connected to the fake wood mid door paneling above it(see pics). I assume I should remove the whole door panel to really get in there with this project, correct? Any advice on this subject(removing/installing), would greatly appreciated, before I get started.
I'm curious also, but from your pics your door panel carpet looks nice? Are you doing a color swap or are the pics hiding something? I've read about dyeing the carpet if its just faded..Good luck either way, I will be watching for any answers as mine is pretty bad lol..o No:
The door carpet is pretty faded, and they floor carpet is really grimey and needs to get replaced, so I thought replacing both so I would have all new carpet all around. I haven't considered the carpet dyeing. Can that be applied without taking the door panels off and is there a big plus to keep that old carpet on and just dye? If taking all these parts off the door is more of headache than it's worth and dying would be around better, then that would be nice to know before I started, the replacement carpet isn't that expensive if I decided to not do it.
If its originally black then I'd just suggest spraying it with some SEM You can do this without removing the door panels, just mask everything off But you will probably get better results if you remove the panels and spray them that way
I painted my door and kick panel carpets. You have nothing to loose. If you don't like the result, then do the replacement. Just make sure you do a good masking job.
OK, I can try the SEM flat black paint for $10. Thanks for the tips. If the spray doesn't happen, I'd still like to come back here as a resource for changing that interior door panel carpet altogether with the new replacement carpet I received. Yeap, I have had good success with the Sem dye on some bucket seats...I haven't tried it on carpet yet but have read a lot of people have and had great results..I've even seen some people used rit and say they have had good results (with black carpet)..I would use Sem myself though..Good luck with the project I'm sure it will turn out great ---------- Post added at 03:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:40 PM ---------- Not sure if that is the correct Sem you have posted...They make products specific for different applications..You can research their product line on the forum, I would type Sem and carpet..I'm sure you will find the best product for your application..
Yup, called summit at their #800 on that ebay link, it is the right one and says carpet on it. I think I'll try it, it'll give me some experience for future projects and if I'm not happy I'll still replace the old stuff.:blast:

I ended up using the SEM black spray paint and it worked(not pictured here), it was cheap and quick way to revitalize the look. I did replace the floor carpet and had to move on, I have other projects to handle. I'll probably add more LED lights in the car when I get some downtime. SO... I have door replacement carpets to hold onto until i really want to replace the carpet. I don't have the time to fiddle with that original door paneling at the moment. I'll post an image of the door panel carpet when I get a chance it's just a clean black color now.
